xx Duke: for the first time.

I must admit this was a bit of a shock to the system after their previous albums, but after many listens I started to really get into it. I don't think it will ever be my favourite album, but it will get plenty of plays in my house. I can see why it spawned three hits, and Misunderstanding is one which has been stuck in my head ever since.

I would rank the tracks as follows:
Man of our times
Dukeís Travels
Dukeís End
Duchess
Turn it on Again
Behind the Lines
Misunderstanding
Cul-de-sac
Heathaze
Guide Vocal
Alone Tonight
Please Donít Ask

Kudos for giving Man Of Our Times the top spot. Excellent track if you ask me. What it lacks in lyrical depth, it totally makes up for in musicianship and the sheer power of Phil's vocals.

Please Don't Ask the worst? Well, I wasn't fond of it at first, but I eventually "got it" and now I love it. It's a bit awkwardly written though.

MoOT is also one of my favourites. The lurching riff gives it a similarity to Back in NYC - Mike came up with both riffs I believe.

I agree with NSOV that Please Don't Ask is actually a decent song - one of Phil's most poignant in that vein. I'm not sure it fits in with the album though.

Man of Our Times was always the standout one for me. As you say, the vocal performance is amazing, and musically it's excellent. Does it usually get criticised?

I'm on to Abacab next, but have been listening a lot to Trespass and Wind and Wuthering, which just get better and better each time I hear them.

A few people here have called it Duke's worst track! shocked And it doesn't often get placed high in people's rankings, or talked much about for that matter. The band never performed it live and tributes almost never perform it either.

Hi there

Always loved Cul De Sac myself but a great album all round. Even the B sides are superb!

Interesting to me that the MOOT would be the focus of discussion under a subject titled "Duke for the first time."

MOOT was initially my favourite song from the album when it was released. When I saw them on that tour, I recall hoping it would be one of the new songs they performed, and, of course, it wasn't.

Today, MOOT is more likely to stir up fond memories for me, than anything else.
I like it and appreciate it in that respect, but if I weigh it against the other songs on Duke, there is easily more than half the album that I would choose ahead of it.

Like a lot of Genesis songs, some of DUKE's songs inspire a wide variety of opinions. "Man of Our Times" and "Please Don't Ask" are very high on my DUKE list, for example, but they're very low on other people's.

When I think back of hearing Duke for the first time, Cul-de-Sac was the one instant favourite for me. smiley That and Duke's Travels. Anyone else?

You use the shocked smiley, but IMO Duke is such a strong album that to be the "worst track" is not a big insult.

I think my ranking would be:

Duke's Travels
Cul-de-Sac
Behind the Lines
Duke's End
Heathaze
Guide Vocal
Duchess
Please Don't Ask
Turn it On Again
Man of Our Times
Misunderstanding
Alone Tonight
