It's amazing how we can interperate things so radically different....

I always heard it as being about chemical warfare.

Maybe Tony was unclear on purpose?

Not quite.

Dinosaurs are used here as a metaphor for 70s Prog bands, as labelled by the punk contingent. smiley

Does it really have to be about the extinction of prog bands? undecided That implies that every single prog group died to never return. The extinction of regular dinosaurs makes much more sense. They thought they'd rule the world forever, before the meteor shower arrived. A deadly force they didn't expect. Sorry but it'll always be about the actual dinosaurs to me.

Guys, it's about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Trust me smiley

The Cul-De-Sac of the title is the fact that the British Empire is dead, but the top brass can't accept it (which they still can't, btw).

"Wake up now, it's the time you've waited for" refers to the provos belief that would be able to eject the British from the North by violence.

"How can you fight a foe so deadly when you don't even know it's there" refers to the Provos preferred method at that time of blowing up innocent Brits in pubs and streets, etc.

Honestly, I see it as a highly charged track, which just slipped under the radar. Mr Banks is good at that kind of thing...

And the irony is, the dinosaurs live on, while the punks are extinct.

From my personal viewpoint, I wouldn't call this a classic. I share the view that this is very similar to 'Wind & Wuthering', and I also share the view that 'Duke' is the rebirth of Genesis into a new era. I've always held that 'Trick' is the last prog hurrah of Genesis after Peter left, 'Wind' is a dreary attempt to be serious that sucks the fun and life out of the music, and 'Three' is the sort of aftermath of 'Wind' before 'Duke' comes along.

It's like a phoenix. 'Trick' is the brilliant firebird, 'Wind' is the burn-out, 'Three' is the ash full of potential, and 'Duke' is the next firebird. But it seems a lot of people are really, really fond of 'Wind & Wuthering', so I better watch what I say. Like I've always said, to each their own, but I guess I'm the odd one out in regards to 'Wind'.

Despite what people may believe, I don't really hold that much of a grudge against ATTW3. I just find it very out of place when compared to its predecessors.

It's not a classic as in 'it's one of the best Genesis albums money can buy' but it's more of a landmark album that showed a new direction the trio are heading to.

That reminds me of when Jonathan Ross said that it was strange the Buster premiere party was at the Natural History Museum - and Phil said "if it was Genesis it would be understandable".

For me it's the worst Genesis album. It sounds uninspired overall and the only songs I like are the shortest ones (particularly Many Too Many). The longer songs sound like they're going through the motions and some of Tony Banks' keyboard parts need to be reined in. Duke was a much needed breath of fresh air. The Lady Lies in particular is appallingly naff lyrically and musically. And the cover's they're worsed aswell.

I wouldn't call this song appallingly naff because I do enjoy it, but I do agree that the track suffers from middling lyrics and an uninteresting climax.
