That's quite interesting.Whatever happened to Hentschel after Duke?

He's still active as far as I know. He also produced one of my favourite Mike Oldfield albums QE2. smiley

To me, Duke is the album on which Phil Collins, the superstar, who would go on to dominate '80s music, was born. You can trace it all back to Duke and his input into that album. So that's why I think there was a big change between ATTW3 and Duke.

I think rather than a "classic" album (however each of us defines that word), I regard ATTWT as a "pivotal" album, closing out the 70s sound and intimating at what would come in the 80s.

From the 70s point of view, it lacks longer, standout tracks (although Burning Rope comes close, imo), despite being packed with great sounds and some decent storytelling.

From the 80s point of view, the only hit was FYFM and the rest of the material was not sufficiently radio friendly to be accessible to a mainstream audience.

ATTWT was my "first" Genesis album and I still adore it. But the album before it, W&W, was better, and the album after it, Duke, was quite a lot better. Both W&W and Duke deserve to be called "classic", but not ATTWT.

And Mike's best ever guitar solo too. wink

I think the weird time signature of opener Down and Out is classic old Genesis. I always think people who bought the album loving Follow You Follow Me must have been freaked out when they started playing the album.

To me, that says more about radio than about the album, but I know what you mean. wink

The band would certainly agree with you on the last part, they were often dismissive of ATTW3 and I think rather proud of the fact Duke took them to number one for the first time and was more of a collaborative writing triumph. However, Tony has said that he considers ATTW3 to have three of the best songs he's ever written, though which three he meant I'm not sure, since he wrote four of the songs.

That comment has always intrigued me but for some reason I've always guessed that the 1 of the 4 he's not so proud of, lyrically at least, is The Lady Lies. undecided I hasten to add that I love TLL, both musically and lyrically. smiley

I'd certainly consider it a better Tony song than A Trick of the Tail or All in a Mouse's Night from the previous albums that are generally higher regarded than ATTW3. wink So I'd go so far as to say that ATTW3 has four of Tony's best songs on it.

True, but I don’t think there’s really as much in it as is generally perceived when you actually compare track lengths with previous albums. No it doesn’t have a 10 minute track, but WAW only had one of those and TOTT didn’t have any, and they both have their share of shorter tracks too. But that seems to be enough for ATTWT to be perceived as an album of short tracks.

I doubt track lengths would have got commented on if they’d have added another minute or two to The Lady Lies and Burning Rope. Just an extra 4mins or so on an album that’s already 53 mins long could have made it an epic prog-fest like its predecessors rather than the album where they started doing shorter songs.

I think that comes from the number of songs. Before ATTWT, FGTR was the only album (except for The Lamb) featuring more than 9 songs. 5 resp. 6 songs per side is what "normal" albums used to have, Genesis never had that - again except for The Lamb but that's a concept album so I guess it doesn't count.

I am the only one here who thinks that Tony's Cul-De-Sac is awesome? It seems to be a "take it or leave it" track for a lot users here. undecided

No, you're not smiley It's a very intelligent song, quite politically charged if you interpret the lyrics a certain way. Personally, I take that track to be criticising the British government's policy in Northern Ireland at the time, but I might be reading too much into it rolleyes
