When you ask many Genesis fans or prog fans in general,And Then There Were Three is always an album that rarely gets a mention as being up there with the best of Genesis.Personally i think it's a good solid entry,as good as anything they recorded as a three piece.
Burning Rope,Motherlode,Undertow and The Lady Lies are all good examples of Genesis at their best, but is it the other tracks that slightly disappoint? Or is it that there are no epics on the record, and that the songs are too short? And with Follow you,Follow me did the die-hard Genesis fan say enough and turn their backs on them?

Classic for me, but I know I'm in a minority.

I don't care if you call it a classic or not. It's a bloody great album and I enjoy listening to it and that's it. tongue

I think it's an excellent album. But using the word classic... I don't know, it sounds strange to call it that. When I see the album cover, I don't think "classic album", I think "A new era begins...". ATTWT seems really cut off from the previous eight albums, like there's a giant wall dividing them (Seconds Out could represent that wall). Think of it this way - imagine the first eight albums are all having a party. And then, ATTWT walks through the door. Suddenly, the music stops, weird looks are given and ATTWT, embarrassed, walks out and joins the other party, with all the other albums. That's how I feel about it. It just stands out so much when grouped in with the first eight, and even as a fan of the album, calling it a "classic" would be like calling Camel's Rain Dances a classic. I very much like both albums, but both are still culturally deemed departures from classic eras, and thus look more unified when considered part of their non-classic eras.

Classic? Most definitely.

The album that started me on Genesis, even though I'd heard all the previous albums courtesy of my Genesis mad Brother in Law.

ATTW3 is one of my fave G albums (if not my absolute fave!) but I wouldn't say it's a classic because the consensus says otherwise.

However, I do think of it as a second debut album. It's the debut album by the 3 man model of Genesis.

And like all debuts, they are usually a bit patchy, but they also contain a magical spirit that is never captured again in following releases.

And it's that spirit, that essence that bowls me over every time.

I first heard that album when I was 6 years old as my Aunt used to play it a lot. I remember hearing that big drum roll/fill at the beginning of Burning Rope and said to my Mum that I wanted to learn how to do that!!

I'm now a pro musician, so thanks Phil!! smiley

Interesting and slightly disappointing to learn that Phil hates that song though. And of course Mike & Tony aren't convinced by the album. Even Storm T hated the cover... Which I think matches the music perfectly...

Maybe I'm someone who likes a bit of raw, spirited imperfection about things....

It's probably why I rate The Lamb and NC so highly too.

Clearly we all hear different things when listening to ATTWT. But I still think that ATTWT sounds much more like Wind And Wuthering than many would have you believe. I see Duke as a more significant change in direction.

So far there have been 9 replies expressing an opinion:

5 say it is a classic
2 say it is excellent but not a classic
2 say define or don't care for the word classic

If you're happy with that and the vast sample size of 9, then feel free to put your brother-in-law straight. grin wink

Side 1: Disappointing.

Side 2: 2 great openers, 2 that let it sag badly in the middle, and 2 good closers. So no, not a classic, IMO!

Not to throw off the "classic" votes but I have mixed feelings about the album.

In a lot of ways it reminds me of Calling All Stations, in that it was primarily written by Mike and Tony. Judging only those two albums side by side that writing combo produces a very particular kind of sound, even when separated by 20 years.

And they're both transitional albums too, though only ATTWT has the benefit of being a transition to something rather than nothing.

I like a lot of what's on And Then There Were Three, and I can't point to any particular song I dislike at all, but there's something...hard to put into words that's a little unsatisfying about the album as a whole.

I know that Steve's departure is heard quite clearly, and the lack of really interesting guitar parts is noticeable. Of course, all three of them compensate by playing more, but that often leads to that huge "wall of sound" they worked to pare back on Duke before dropping entirely on Abacab.

Maybe it's that it does look a little too hard backwards, because I also hear a lot of Wind and Wuthering echos, but because of that it also seems to have a little less forward motion into something new.

So for me it's a very likable album, and knowing where it's all going in retrospect makes it's shortcomings easier to overlook, but it isn't one of my top favorites.
