Rightly or wrongly, many long term Genesis fans regard Steve's departure as a pivotal moment in the band's history. So what are your top 20 Genesis tracks recorded after Steve's departure? Here are mine in album chronological order:

  1. Down And Out
  2. Undertow
  3. Burning Rope
  4. Deep In The Motherlode
  5. Many Too Many
  6. The Lady Lies
  7. Heathaze
  8. Turn It On Again
  9. Duke's Travels/Duke's End
  10. Abacab
  11. Me And Sarah Jane
  12. Dodo/Lurker
  13. Mama
  14. Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea
  15. Silver Rainbow
  16. No Son Of Mine
  17. Driving The Last Spike
  18. Fading Lights
  19. The Dividing Line
  20. There Must Be Some Other Way

Nice thread idea, and no offense, but I think listing these songs in chronological order is way too simple. I think most folks could do it in minutes and many of the lists will look very much the same.

The challenge, in my opinion, is ranking them by preference. Here's my go....

1. Home/Second Home by The Sea
2. Duke's Travels/Duke's End
3. Burning Rope
4. Driving The Last Spike
5. Me And Sarah Jane
6. Fading Lights
7. Heathaze
8. One Man's Fool
9. You Might Recall
10. Undertow
11. Domino
12. Abacab
13. The Lady Lies
14. Throwing It All Away
15. The Dividing Line
16. Keep It Dark
17. Like It Or Not
18. Small Talk
19. Living Forever
20. Mama

No offence taken. wink To be honest, I was just being lazy in not ranking my choices. That said, I find it almost impossible to rank lots of songs taken from a range of albums covering a number of years. And whilst I just went for chronological order, there is nothing in my post to preclude using any ordering you like. Of course if I did rank my songs, I would still have the same number one. And despite what you say, our choices are quite significantly different. wink

Hmmm, not really. Choosing 20 songs from seven albums.... and we matched 12 of those? You and I matched either 10 or 11 of NoSon's?

It's all in how you look at it at course, but my point is that there are 10-12 songs (out of what, 80-90 including b-sides?) that will be on most people's lists. smiley

Thatís probably true but would we really all pick the same tracks? If I didnít find the prospect of compiling a top 20 in order of preference too daunting, mine would include Thatís All, Illegal Alien, Follow You Follow Me & Jesus He Knows Me, which all seem to be fairly (& undeservedly) unpopular amongst fans wink

Jesus he knows me is often compared to illegal alien because they both are humorous, but I find jesus much darker, musically at least.

The other day I answered a quiz on my blog, that consisted in imagining what you would be if you were: a book, a movie, a song, a car, a painting... My answer to the song question was home by the sea by Genesis. But I really don't know why...

6- Undertow
7- Fading Lights
8- Down & Out
9- Driving The Last Spike
10 Deep In The Motherlode
11 Duchess/Guide Vocal
12 Dukes Travels/End
13 Scenes from a Nights Dream
14 Say It's Alright Joe
15 Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea
16 Domino
17 Please Don't Ask

I'll try ranking mine, but everything outside the top 5 was particularly tricky to rank:

=1 Follow You Follow Me
=1 Home by the Sea / Second Home by the Sea
3 Keep It Dark
4 Duchess
5 Guide Vocal
6 Turn It On Again
7 Never A Time
8 Undertow
9 Domino
10 Misunderstanding
11 Many Too Many
12 Land of Confusion
13 That's All
14 Duke's Travels / Duke's End
15 Throwing It All Away
16 I Can't Dance
17 Man On The Corner
18 Jesus He Knows Me
19 Silver Rainbow
20 Since I Lost You

Thing is, ask me on another day and I may well come up with quite a different list. I haven't played most of these albums all the way through for ages, and when I do play one, I usually find a new short term favourite song....

I hardly ever rank because it's so hard. So this is the way I did it this time: first I typed in all the post-Hackett songs I like best, which happened to be a little more than 40. I included live versions because sometimes I love certain versions though the studio versions do nothing for me, for example Invisible Touch; and I included live medleys too even if they include Hackett-era songs because medleys often differ a lot from the individual songs in regular length and there's some medleys I really like, plus some of them didn't exist in their respective forms in the Hackett era.
So, after typing down all these songs I ranked them from bottom to top. I was surprised myself how the list turned out. As I said, it is really hard, especially as Duke/ATTW3 songs don't really compare to WCD songs imho. They are just too different, you can't compare apples and pears. I left it a top 40 list, I don't have the heart to kick those poor songs out who didn't make it top 20. I mean come on, all those songs are great... tongue

1. Cul-De-Sac
2. Duke's Travels/Duke's End
3. Me and Sarah Jane
4. Evidence of Autumn
5. Old Medley (TWWW)
6. Say It's Alright Joe
7. Many Too Many
8. Deep In The Motherlode
9. On The Shoreline
10. Dreaming While You Sleep
11. The Day The Light Went Out
12. Scenes From A Night's Dream
13. TTT/IT (2007)
14. Cage Medley (2007)
15. Driving The Last Spike (live TWWW)
16. That's All
17. It's Gonna Get Better (live Archive #2)
18. Vancouver
19. The Lady Lies
20. Turn It On Again with Oldies Medley

21. You Might Recall
22. Living Forever
23. One Man's Fool
24. Please Don't Ask
25. Follow You Follow Me
26. Carpet Crawlers 1999
27. Guide Vocal
28. Heathaze
29. Submarine
30. Misunderstanding
31. Way Of The World
32. Tell Me Why
33. I Can't Dance
34. Jesus He Knows Me
35. Not About Us
36. Me and Virgil
37. Dodo/Lurker (live 3SL)
38. Taking It All Too Hard
39. Home By The Sea
40. The Brazilian

Oh yea and - Carpet Crawlers 1999 is post-Hackett, right? wink

I'm sure that something similar has been done before, but maybe not for a while. wink

P.S. My main motivation for starting this thread was seeing the tribute band Mama last night because they played a lot of post-Hackett material and played it damn well. smiley
