I just think some people on this forum have ridiculously high standards for Genesis songs. I think that Your Own Special Way is a work of art shimmering with detail, and before I joined this forum I expected everyone to think roughly the same. But I have noticed that many on here don't consider it Genesis-standard, just because it's not as good as their exceptional ones. undecided

To be fair, itís a band that set itself ridiculously high standards from quite early on.

It would be a duller world if we all thought the same, & it would certainly make having polls pointless smiley

It would have attracted less criticism on a weaker album. I find it slushy, but thatís just my opinion.

I've always liked YOSW but can appreciate some people find it syrupy.
I think Giant Hogweed is one of the friggin most amazing tracks Genesis ever recorded yet many fans think it's clunky and don't care for it.

If we all liked and disliked the same things to the same degree, there'd be no point in discussing music.
While I may sometimes shake my head in wonder at other people's tastes, I feel there is more to gain from someone offering a different perspective than having them reaffirm my own views.

This could be my top 5, though everyday I tend more to listen to the albums as a whole. The right side of my brain is becoming more dominant, I guess.

1. the cinema show
2. home / second home by the sea
3. stagnation
4. one for the vine
5. squonk

Merely describing it as 'a bad Genesis song' is a massive compliment. angry However, what made you so sure that my list contained bad songs at all?

Are you angry at yourself for realising the hypocrisy of condoning the criticism of 4 other songs but not the one you like?

In my estimation, it's twee and absolutely downright sucks. Only one of 2 Genesis songs I actively detest.

It's got nothing to do with having high standards. It's about having any standards at all. laugh laugh laugh

The live version with the string quartet makes it marginally more listenable but the studio version is saccharine twunk. I also think the vocal performance is appallingly weak. Not something I normally associate with PC.
