Not a single weak track on side 3, as far as I'm concerned. Though there aren't really any on the album as a whole, only songs I have to be in the mood for.

Actually I do have a vote for "overrated": FOXTROT. Sure, it's got "Supper's Ready," but it's not like the album maintains that level of quality all the way through. Tracks 2-4 are good just 'cause they're Genesis, but they're hardly the best the Gabriel era has to offer. NURSERY CRYME is a more consistent, perfect album IMO.

Over: Selling England By The Pond

I found it a bit of a backward step after Foxtrot which seemed to be the true stepping stone to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. I like More Fool Me the best but not really keen on a lot of the songs.

Under: Calling All Stations

I think the first five songs in particular are amazing especially the title track and Alien Afternoon.

I think time has put things in context for the majority of the albums, they are, all things considered, where they should be, I believe.
Perhaps I could say Trespass is a bit underrated; the sound is outdated, some lyrics are dodgy and they couldn't really play but both atmosphere and material are quite strong imo.
Conversely, I found Abacab overrated, while I would never underestimate the importance of the album and I appreciate the energy it exudes, in terms of material I fiind it quite poor.

An oldd topic to post in!

Overrated: Lamb (reluctantly but I had to choose)

Underraated: Abacab & Genesis

I have finally heard CAS which is probably underrated by most Genesis fans.

Interesting. As much as I love IT, it only seems to get a bad rep from those strictly camped in the 'prog' section.

In my opinion.

Overrated: None.

Underrated: Trespass, Nursery Cryme, ...And Then There Were Three..., and Genesis

I personally find side two of Genesis to be criminally underrated in particular.

The reason I mentioned Abacab is that I've now seen several people claim it's the worst album Genesis ever made, and while I certainly wouldn't place it in the "essential" category, I think itís definitely the best of the post-Duke era. There are no MTV-ready novelty singles, no bland adult-contemporary ballads, the arrangements have aged fairly well, and it has a punchy, aggressive energy that itís successors mostly lack, as well as what I consider to be some of the best later material (tracks 1, 3, 4 and 5 in particular). Itís not one of my favourites or one that I listen to very often, but I do think itís better than it's given credit for.

I find all the things you mention on Shapes, particularly the first side and not on Abacab. I don't think that Abacab has anything remotely as strong as Mama and HBTS1&2 on it.

For me, Trick and especially W&W are overrated. Abacab is an odd one as it's so divisive in that it's loved by some and derided by others, with some but not much middle ground. That said, I do think it's underrated by those who dislike it.
