Best Vocals?

In your opinion, what are the top songs where Phil has supplied the best vocal ability? I'm still floored by his power rock vocals on Mama (of which I've been compelled to say is the best Genesis vocal ever), but I also really like the vocals on One For The Vine, Guide Vocal, Me and Sarah Jane... there really are a lot to choose from.
You can also list the best Peter vocals if you'd like. Personally I'm not a big fan of his voice (my one deterrent of listening to the Gabriel era more often), but perhaps I could be persuaded by good suggestions. And also to be fair.

Hi there, Phil, and welcome to our little Forum.
I'm going to have to give this one a lot of thought. Off the top of my head, I'm particularly enamoured of some of the softer songs in which Phil shifts from quiet singing to much much more emotional intensity. For example, think the "Throw some bread to the ducks" vocal in "Heathaze". Similarly, "Many Too Many" and "Like It Or Not" are two of my favorite vocals.
As for Peter, I love him and his voice. I'm probably not alone in saying that one outstanding Gabriel vocal that jumps to mind is "Carpet Crawlers".
Looking forward to this discussion.

Driving The Last Spike immediately comes to mind as one of Phil's best vocals.
Entangled is another standout, especially since the new remix lifted the clouds of reverb all over his earlier vocal tracks.
Abacab (the album) is a very general standout, as that was the first time Phil's ability, proficiency, and singing instincts all came together.
For Peter, I'd say Dancing With The Moonlit Knight, The Chamber of 32 Doors, and Back In NYC are all standouts.
Overall I think Peter's singing on the whole of Selling England is "better" than the Lamb, but I think his edgier, riskier vocals on the Lamb are a progression from the confidence he seemed to have on Selling England.

Find it hard to disagree with anything WinstonWolf has said.
I would add "Duke's Travels" and "Mama" to Phil's best vocal performances.
Was listening intently to SEBTP only the other day and was enthralled by the range of Peter's vocals throughout. The zenith being TBOEF. Where else could you hear the pre-punkiness of "I'm breaking legs...." shortly followed by the wonderful campness of "pin-up guru"?!!! Brilliant!

Fully disregarding the material, meaning what he actually was singing I think Phil's vocals were top notch on 3 albums: Abacab, Shapes and IT, I saw some concerts during that period and he was one hell of a lead singer, perfect pitch all the time, powerful and lyrical at the same time. Before that his voice was a bit too angelical and at times he didn't sound like he was interested in being a singer although he did an excellent job. After that, his voice become thiner, no doubt because of the strain it was under for years and also it became slightly nasal, he was able to cope imo because of his immense craft and skills but he became a slightlly different singer again. Personally I think he was technically better than Peter but apart from the fact that I prefer Peter's tone, which is really subjective and the fact that Peter still sings better than ever while Phil cannot anymore, I think Peters was much more soulful and his voice has more 'personality'. Anyway, mama it is for me.

Red Rain for instance? Or if we are only talking Genesis here: The Apocalypse in 9/8th section in Supper`s Ready
Speaking of Phil, I always get goosebumps listening to him singing Afterglow on Three Sides Live. A much more powerful version, than on Seconds Out or even on Wind And Wuthering. But maybe that is just me, feeling that way.

I agree with everything you said, I would add DWTMK which is quite amazing imo, that a Cappella intro never sounded quite the same with Phil live

When it comes to comparing Phil`s and Peter`s voice craft, some wise man`s words come to my mind, I have read somewhere sometime:
Phil`s vocals on Supper`s Ready are better, than Peter`s; but Phil cannot sing it the way Peter does.
