Ten points to Dokstrict 9 and a big thank you to Merryman72 laugh.

It actually fits the whole feel of that too, so I laboured under this misaprehension for several years before hearing the explanation on (US radio phone-in) Rockline in '86!

My sister used to sing, "There's a future for you in the fire brigade" to her fiance, who was a fireman!

I actually heard it for the first time last week when I was transferring the vinyl onto my dad's ipod, and I was a bit surprised when that was the first line I heard!

Not quite a misheard lyric, but worthy of a mention, I think...

Remember that version of "Hooked On A Feeling" by Blue Swede that was a hit back in 1974 (here in the US, anyway)? It was notable for that obnoxious "ooga-chaka, ooga-chaka" chant that had nothing to do with the actual song (and which, BTW, I just found out was originally the idea of our very own Jonathon King!).

Well, when it first came out I always heard the second syllable of the chant as being the first, so I thought it was "gotcha-gah-oo, gotcha-gah-oo" -- which, frankly, I think manages to be even more obnoxious than "ooga-chaka."
