Definitly Selling England by the Pound... For sure, it has got strong songs, but I can't listen to the Studio Versions. I really fell asleep during Cinema Show. The Live versions a whole lot better. Phil's drumming is to soft on this one as well. Even on the 2007 Remaster, there is just not enough power for me. The Lamb or Foxtrott had alot more power.

I like these songs, but only the live versions. Hm, but I still don't like the Battle of Epping Forest. cheesy

Over: SEBTP
I like the album but it's definatly not their greatest as people claim it to be. Battle of Epping Forrest is just tedious.
Under: ATTWT
IMO their most underrated. It's been dismissed by alot of fans and the band themselves. Has great songs such as "Say It's Alright Joe" and "Burning Rope".

Interesting, I have the opposite opinion.
Those SOFT jazzy drums on CS is what I prefer!

Interesting. As much as I love IT, it only seems to get a bad rep from those strictly camped in the 'prog' section.

Not really, not much has remained as a pop album, people, not necessarily Genesis fans from either camp but people who were around at the time, still tend to remember Wham or Duran Duran, things like that but not IT. Personally I think it was rated correctly, it was a hit machine and it peerfectly served the purpose

Underrated Trespass. Green, poorly produced and with some bad choices but the material is imo very strong.
Overrated WCD. It's really 3 to 4 good songs drowning in a sea of mediocrity imo.

Overrated: Selling England By The Pound.

DON'T get me wrong, this album is one of my favorites! But I really don't think it should be regarded as the perfect and amazing album that it's apparently been hailed as. It is a solid PG era album, and some great songs, but there are also weak spots, just like the others. And IMO, any album that has weak spots at all, should not be on that high a pedestal. There are a few other more "technical" reasons for my opinion as well where I prefer other albums, (performance, mixing, instrumentation, etc.) but I'm too lazy to get into all of them right now. wink

Underrated: Invisible Touch

At the risk of being told to walk the plank, I will say I agree this album gets a bad rap sometimes due to certain songs having more of a "poppy" nature. But I disagree that it was Genesis selling out-AND I strongly disagree that it was all Phil Collins influence! There's tons of material on this album that is strictly Mike's or strictly Tony's! They all have said that at that time, their style was evolving-just look at their previous 3 albums! There are several songs on this album that are truly Genesis, style wise, as only Genesis could do it! Imagine some other band trying to do The Brazilian, or Domino, or hell-even Tonight Tonight Tonight! Impossible! There's really only 3 songs on there that could be classified as "poppy" anyway: Invisible Touch, In Too Deep, and Throwing it All Away. I have a hard time classifying Land of Confusion as a cheezy pop song. I'm actually quite surprised that more Genesis fans don't love this song! To each his own, I suppose...but In this case, I will let the album sales number for Invisible Touch speak for itself!!! wink

Is anything by Genesis actually "overrated"? Do we mean overrated by some fans on the internet? Genesis don't exactly get lauded by the music press.

Overrated - Nursery Cryme (Emperor's New Clothes)

Underrated - ATTWT (not perfect but near enough)

I might even tend to agree on NC but there is that little thing called MB that alone makes the whole album imo and Fountain? Not too shabby either.
On ATTWT I still maintain it was their weakest album up to that point and not as good as his successor, overall, considering what came afterwards a good album but not very solid materialwise imo. Sooooorry Nige.
