Underrated Trespass. Green, poorly produced and with some bad choices but the material is imo very strong.
Overrated WCD. It's really 3 to 4 good songs drowning in a sea of mediocrity imo.

Overrated: Selling England By The Pound.

DON'T get me wrong, this album is one of my favorites! But I really don't think it should be regarded as the perfect and amazing album that it's apparently been hailed as. It is a solid PG era album, and some great songs, but there are also weak spots, just like the others. And IMO, any album that has weak spots at all, should not be on that high a pedestal. There are a few other more "technical" reasons for my opinion as well where I prefer other albums, (performance, mixing, instrumentation, etc.) but I'm too lazy to get into all of them right now. wink

Underrated: Invisible Touch

At the risk of being told to walk the plank, I will say I agree this album gets a bad rap sometimes due to certain songs having more of a "poppy" nature. But I disagree that it was Genesis selling out-AND I strongly disagree that it was all Phil Collins influence! There's tons of material on this album that is strictly Mike's or strictly Tony's! They all have said that at that time, their style was evolving-just look at their previous 3 albums! There are several songs on this album that are truly Genesis, style wise, as only Genesis could do it! Imagine some other band trying to do The Brazilian, or Domino, or hell-even Tonight Tonight Tonight! Impossible! There's really only 3 songs on there that could be classified as "poppy" anyway: Invisible Touch, In Too Deep, and Throwing it All Away. I have a hard time classifying Land of Confusion as a cheezy pop song. I'm actually quite surprised that more Genesis fans don't love this song! To each his own, I suppose...but In this case, I will let the album sales number for Invisible Touch speak for itself!!! wink

Is anything by Genesis actually "overrated"? Do we mean overrated by some fans on the internet? Genesis don't exactly get lauded by the music press.

Overrated - Nursery Cryme (Emperor's New Clothes)

Underrated - ATTWT (not perfect but near enough)

I might even tend to agree on NC but there is that little thing called MB that alone makes the whole album imo and Fountain? Not too shabby either.
On ATTWT I still maintain it was their weakest album up to that point and not as good as his successor, overall, considering what came afterwards a good album but not very solid materialwise imo. Sooooorry Nige.

Fab, there is really no need to apologise. wink

1. If somebody says they dislike ATTWT, that's a valid opinion albeit contrary to mine.

2. If somebody says that ATTWT is not underrated, that's a valid opinion albeit contrary to mine.

3. If somebody says that ATTWT is overrated by me, that's a valid opinion albeit contrary to mine.

4. But if somebody says that ATTWT is overrated, that's total b***ocks as the album is held in such low esteem by so many.

I do sometimes think that the copies of ATTWT I've had over the years - at least 1 LP, 1 musicassette and 2 CDs - must sound different to almost everybody else's. grin Alternatively, perhaps my ears and brain are processing the music in a totally different fashion. rolleyes Because when I listen to ATTWT, I hear so much of what I like about all 1970s Genesis. By contrast, when I listen to Duke, I hear a sound which is changing significantly coinciding with the start of a new decade. I will go to my grave thinking that ATTWT is a wonderful album, no matter what anybody else says. smiley However, I think I will stop flogging a dead horse in terms of saying this. wink

And that proves once more how different personal perceptions are. Musical Box is a great song but tbh I always found it to be the weakest song on NC. wink

I'm sorry, but to describe one of their least popular albums as over-rated is quite frankly b***ocks! angry

Considering that the terms "underrated" and "overrated" are essentially subjective, I would point out that ATTWT has been generally highly regarded in comparison to much later albums.

Not really, not much has remained as a pop album, people, not necessarily Genesis fans from either camp but people who were around at the time, still tend to remember Wham or Duran Duran, things like that but not IT. .

Certainly many Genesis fans, though probably not you, see Invisible Touch as more than simply a "hit machine".

There are those people, not necessarily Genesis fans, who were around at the time, that didn't put much consideration into albums such as SEBTP and LLDOB because, well, Genesis simply weren't that high profile of a band.

BTW, Wham and Duran Duran hit big long before (2-4 years) Invisible Touch was released. But apparently for some reason you prefer to lump all these together. rolleyes

But what always puzzles and amuses me is how this sort of thing always turns into a petty contest of stylistic preferences.

I think it means fans on the internet who are obsessively determined to push their opinion at any opportune moment. grin

I don't think any Genesis albums strike me as particularly overrated or underrated, but I will make this observation: On this board, I have seen THE LAMB being (in my opinion) both overrated and underrated by different people!

There cannot be a debate when a difference in opinion and taste is so radical imo. I think 'To each his own ' is the only possible formula wink
