It's funny, from the live shows I would rate High Life as a favourite, but so far everyone has said it's a low point on the album (I've still not heard the album yet).

I am really looking forward to hearing The Letter, as I've heard nothing but good things about that one.

Thank you for your comments!

had only a couple of listens, so this is an immediate reaction - the title track is absolutely the strongest thing on here - I disagree that it's plastic soul - Roachford's vocal is deeply soulful and heartfelt and the Gospel edge with the choir is really powerful.

Are You Ready is upbeat musically and drives along with a detailed, textured sound but just lacks something around the chorus/hook. Howar sings it well, though.

There are number of mid-tempo numbers that are nicely put together, immaculately produced and performed, but I miss the rockier texture of earlier Mechanics work. Wonder, Best Is Yet To Come and Save The World are all easy on the ear but maybe not earworms (yet?).

High Life is really different - closer to rewired territory - unusual drum pattern and some nice acoustic playing from Mike.

The Letter is another highlight - some really interesting keyboard sounds and of course the guitar riff from Land of Confusion and a guitar refrain that reminds me of Silent Running's 'can you hear me?' line (!) - but an intriguing song lyrically and some heavier work from the band - but of drama all round - would like more like this in future.

Of the remaining songs, Not Out of Love opens with a very different piano run into a more conventional Mechanics sound - some great harmony singing between Andrew and Tim. This sounds like it wouldn't be out of place on Beggar.

Love Left Over opens with a nicely sparse arrangement and slowly builds with layers of sounds - really good dynamics here. the string arrangements sound a bit Beatlesy in places.

I'll be There For You has it's DNA in Now That You've Gone - a mixture of keyboard sounds that recall very early Mechanics. Would have like it to go somewhere else at some point middle-8th-wise.

The album finishes on Save My Soul - again they've really gone for different keyboard/string sounds - more mellotron-like flute/string mixes here to underpin Roachford's soulful vocals.

All in all, great to hear Mike put new material out there - it's definitely a songwriter's album. there's plenty of his trademark rhythm playing and some tasty snippets of lead guitar - as ever, understated and not overblown. Maybe next time, something long-form or more instrumental might stir up the mix? I'm sure it will reward repeated listens.

The new album is fantastic, and has deservedly entered the UK album chart at number 9:

Great review, CM, thank you for sharing!

Number 9 is not too bad at all in this day and age smiley I'm really pleased for them.

But I'm still waiting for my copy... rolleyes

Will be interested in your thoughts as and when you hear it! No 9 is quite an achievement, I agree smiley

Matches the peak chart position of Beggar...
