I may stir up some controversy now, but i thought "Smallcreeps Day" was a better "Genesis" album than the same year released "Duke"

"At The End Of The Day" still moves me to tears 27 years on!

Hmm..I wouldn't say it's better than 'Duke' but mighty close...it is certainly better than any Genesis album after 'Duke'.
'At The End Of The Day' is a simply gorgeous piece of music.

Yes, I agree that 'At The End Of The Day' is another fine song. And so is 'Overnight Job'. I love the way the guitars cut in on that. A fine way to end the album.
I didn't know the American version had the sides reversed. It would seem strange to hear the Smallcreep Suite after the other songs. shocked

Great album; my mum and dad bought me this back around Christmas 1981, or so - been a big favourite ever since.

Working In Line - great track but what a guitar break halfway through!

Oh man!, I've lurking these boards for a few hours now and I have to advise you Rosie to prepare to experience one of the very finest albums EVER!

Noel McCalla voice is awesome, so good that I often wonder why he wasn't used more often by Mike R.

I can tell you that if you ever get a chance to see Manfred Mann's Earth Band live then you really must. Noel's voice live is one of the very finest I've heard.

That feels better.... grin

How's about them pedals on Moonshine?? Or any of the other songs, for that matter?? 'At the end of the Day' is so beautiful, with NM's vocal and those soaring synths...incredible. smiley

It's easily his best work outside of Genesis and is one of the better "solo" albums to come out of Genesis. But I think there are several better "solo Genesis releases". To me it is not "the best Genesis solo album", but I do prefer it to Duke.

My view is similar though not quite the same.
I like Smallcreep's Day better than any Genesis album that followed Duke.

And I agree with those who think this was Mike's finest moment outside of Genesis and one of the best solo albums to emerge from the Genesis camp.

Sadly, this was the last album to prominently feature Mike's beautiful 12-string playing.
There are one or two Genesis tracks that he's played 12-string on since but not to the extent or as prominently as he did on this album and earlier Genesis.
