Missed this as we were out of town. How was she? I saw her many times from the early 90s into the 2000s, but not much recently.

She was great, as usual. Her band is quite good too. I go and see her whenever she comes around.

Newton Faulkner in Guildford, 22nd November! grin

I just realised that I completely forgot to give my opinion on this concert.

The reason why I didn't give my opinion straight after attending it was because to be honest, I was conflicted. I didn't know what to say. I couldn't form an opinion because I needed a couple of days to think about it, and then I guess I just forgot to explain it here once I'd made my decision. Because it was simultaneously one of the best and one of the most disappointing concerts I've ever been to.

So, on the positive side. It was wonderful. Newton is of course an exceptional guitarist, and he played every song in the setlist perfectly. He was funny and kind, a master at putting on a show and great at audience participation. It was joyous, beautiful, tearjerking even, to see my hero on the stage performing his music.

However... and this was the big problem to me...

He didn't play ANYTHING from Rebuilt By Humans.

Which, as I've stated before numerous times, isn't just my favourite album from him. I consider it the best album ever made in the history of music. If you want to know why, you can search my post history, I've discussed it many times on the forum, I'm not going to go into it yet again.

There wasn't even a mention of it, apart from when he said the phrase "...all of the albums I've made" which barely counts as a mention.

To see Newton Faulkner for the first time... to attend a concert by him at last, finally be in his presence and hear his music... and not hear anything, not one song, from an album so dear to me, the one closest to my heart, was such a shocking disappointment that when the concert ended, I felt almost betrayed. Almost. The concert was brilliant so it's not as though my experience was a negative one.

But I simply cannot understand how he could ignore the entire album, when almost every song on the album is a solid-gold non-improvable classic to me. In fact, he also didn't play anything from my third-favourite of his albums, Studio Zoo, either, which was also a shame. He played an awful lot of his new album, which is a pretty good record though currently his weakest so far in my opinion. And he played a few classics from his other albums... I Need Something, Dream Catch Me, Clouds, Brick By Brick, etc. All good songs. Clouds was especially pure magic, the best song of the evening.

So, seeing Newton Faulkner was a great experience, and I plan to see him in concert again multiple times in the future. But without one song from RBH, it wasn't what it should have been. Sorry Newton, but this is the first big mistake you've made. Loved the concert and you're still one of my favourite people in music. But sadly, you finally disappointed me.

And no, there's absolutely no excuse he could make for not playing anything from it. The songs on it aren't long at all (the longest is 4:18), three songs from it were singles, the album reached #3 in the UK charts. It isn't like Genesis's FGTR. It's one of just six albums. Six albums, and he ignored two of them.

Sorry for the long post but I had to say this stuff.

Paul McCartney last night!!! shocked

It may have been the greatest concert I have ever seen, and I'm going again tonight & will be in the second row so will try to get photos.

Some highlights included a couple of my all time favourite Wings songs. Letting Go & Nineteen Hundred & Eighty-Five (It went without saying that we also got Let Me Roll It & Band On The Run. The fireworks during Live & Let Die were incredible). And Mull of Kintyre with a pipe band! Wow!

He did a couple of songs from his most recent (excellent) album New & even did the Kanye West collaboration.

He did Beatles songs he didn't sing originally - he opened with A Hard Day's Night! I Wanna Be Your Man, Love Me Do (he talked about how nervous he was when singing this - you can hear his nerves to this day), In Spite Of All The Danger, Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite!, most of my favourite song A Day In The Life, which led into Give Peace A Chance, a haunting Something, etc.

He is 75 & he can still shriek Helter Skelter & Hey Jude like nobody else. As for Eleanor Rigby it made the hairs stand on end. I could go on. See him if you can. By the way his band is HOT.

I had no idea he was pulling this one out of the archives. Most of the audience must have had no idea what was going on.

They were actually very receptive to it, far more than they were to Mull Of Kintyre, which may of them didn't seem to remember.

Last night there were changes - Jet and the obscure Temporary Secretary, which was much better than I remembered. After he fluffed the intro of Maybe I'm Amazed on Monday, last night's version was absolutely scorching. Another highlight was My Valentine which was dedicated to his current wife Nancy.

Seriously??
Well I suppose that's one way of realising your age. No one who was a child in the UK when Mull of Kintyre was the Xmas no.1 forever can have forgotten it wink

Good to hear he did such a range of songs including the more obscure ones. I remember liking Temporary Secretary when it came out but haven't heard it since then. Also makes you wonder what happened to the once ubiquitous Alfred Marks secretarial bureau, which I haven't heard mentioned for years.
