Two excellent shows. And before the Perfect Alibi gig and during the interval, the PA system was playing Porcupine Tree's In Absentia. cool

Ultravox at Guildford, September 29th.

Enjoyed last night's show at Guildford. The first half of the set seemed really short at just about an hour, and contained quite a bit of material from their most recent album Brilliant. The set after the interval was longer and contained a few more of their chart hits including my personal favourite 'Lament' and of course 'Vienna'.

There was also quite a bit from the early (Midge Ure) Ultravox days like 'Sleepwalk' and 'Passing Strangers' and it was really good to hear those live.

One thing that struck me was there was very little interaction with the audience - just heads down and on with the songs. If Midge said about 20 words to the audience outside of the songs that was it - not even a 'Good evening Guildford'! Not a complaint, just an observation, as most other bands I've seen do talk to the audience a bit, even if it's just to say 'and here's a song from our new album'.

It was noticeable that Midge didn't hold the long notes during 'Vienna'. His voice still sounds good though.

I gather from comments on facebook that on their Thursday night show at Hammersmith Apollo, someone had got on stage and thrown something (custard pie? drink?) at Midge during the last song - a couple of security guards were noticeable at the front of the stage but there were no bag checks on the way in, and as a lot of the audience stood up to mill around at the edge of the stage, two guys wouldn't have been very effective anyway.

Still, thankfully the 'phantom flan flinger' (own up, who remembers Tiswas?) didn't make an appearance last night and we all went home happy.

Course I remember Tiswas, I'm a Brummie! grin grin grin

Didn't the PFF make an appearance at a G2 gig a few months ago? Was it MK?

Anyway, glad you enjoyed it, Helen. My next gig will be The Busby Babes at the Robin Oct 13th. smiley

Well ar!

(Sadly I am reminded it's not just being a Brummie that makes you remember it, but being of a certain age....!)

I spotted that Midge Ure is doing an acoustic set at the Robin next June - it's a Thursday which makes it trickier than a weekend but I have definitely got it on the 'possible' list. Plenty of time to decide!

Enjoy the Busby Babes!

Agreed.

I've seen her at The Stables and at Folk By The Oak. She does indeed have the voice of an angel wink

Well, at 5.00 pm. last night I was offered a free ticket for Nickleback at the NIA! So ripping my boss's arm off, off I tootled up to Brum to witness a fantastic night of great music with an absolutely fantastic light show! The only gripe was the drums. Far too loud by far! Even with my ear plugs in. Why the hell they had to be so loud was beyond me. It was like someone was beating you in the chest with a fist! And I was at the very back.

Henry would have shot himself in the head. He's not too fond of Nickelback. grin
