Going to see a tribute band Saturday evening, in a pub near us. They're just going to be playing straightforward 70s rock classics by Gerry Rafferty, Status Quo, etc.

My brother Roger in Oregon won passes to see Thomas Dolby perform a short one-man show at a radio station to promote his new album "A Map Of The Floating City."

He opened with "Europa and the Pirate Twins," which apparently impressed my brother and his wife very much, considering he had programmed everything he couldn't perform live and had to time himself to these parts while singing, etc.

He also played some of his new songs. I've preordered the new album and recently purchased the remastered/expanded "Golden Age of Wireless" album on CD. The audio quality is tremendous.

Roger got to talk with Dolby in a meet-and-greet after the show, and he said he's going to be touring with a full band for the new album. From what my bro tells me, it should be something to watch for.

Saw Roxy Magic just under a year ago and they were pretty good. A mate who'd seen them previously, thought they were better the first time he saw them as they played all the early classics. When I saw them they played a lot of their later hits

Hopefully we'll get a 50-50 split of earlier and later material. smiley

We went to see them a month ago at The Robin in Bilston and I can say that they are excellent. There is a very good balance between early and later material so you won't be disappointed

Ok, I've been checking in on this thread for a while, and I'm a bit confused...No offense intended, but I always thought "gigs" meant original bands.

It's probably just me, but I don't consider seeing a tribute band the same as seeing a gig/concert. It's more of a night out, or a night with the fellas' than going to a concert.

Again NO offense intended, but cover bands remind me more of a date night out in a bar or club, than a concert.

My next gigs:

Furthur at MSG on Nov. 10th, and in Atlantic City on Nov.12th.

My Morning Jacket at MSG on Dec. 14th, and hopefully in L.A. on Dec. 1. and San Francisco on Dec. 2

To me, a gig is a band/artist playing live to an audience, whether the material is original or not. Still, each to their own. wink
