Seth Lakeman - Tales From The Barrelhouse.

Please let me know what you think of it Alan.

I like Seth's work and have just been reading about how he made this album.

The 70s equivalent would have been:

I was thinking of what would have been the equivalent groups to Muse and Coldplay in the 1970s in terms of sound and reputation rather than just random groups wink

Rush / Muse - massively popular cult bands with excellent musicianship and dynamic live shows.

Supertramp / Coldplay - blander with more mainstream massive appeal. Great bands but just more middle-of-the-road radio fodder.

As we know, some bands have specific "eras" and have clearly evolved over time.

I'm not a fan of Breakfast in America, the album that vaulted Supertramp into the mainstream stratosphere. However it's my opinion that their three preceding albums are each better than any album I've heard from Rush or Muse or certainly Coldplay.

No biggie. smiley Nov exacerbated the discussion when he brought up Supertramp, to which I had to respond. It harkens back to that very old Supertramp Vs. 10cc thread, in which the merits of the former were alternately attacked and then passionately defended. smiley

The Supertramp versus 10cc thread was started by yours truly. I seem to remember that it was very close and there were excellent arguments given for either band being better. When all is said and done, I love Muse, Coldplay, Rush, Supertramp and 10cc. cool

I don`t really get that. What have got Muse in common with Rush? And why do you think, that a band like Coldplay could be in any way comparable to Supertramp. Coldplay are parsecs away from what Supertramp did even in their weakest moments. I don`t even get that, when you are speaking in terms of popularity....

A four letter name with "us" in the middle. grin wink Seriously though, whilst Muse and Rush don't sound particularly similar, they do share a number of traits:

1. The power trio format.
2. Virtuoso musicianship.
3. A mix of styles incorporating hard rock, progressive rock, electronic music and other styles, e.g. reggae in the case of Rush and R'n'B in the case of Muse.
4. Dynamic live shows.

Muse seem to occasionally incorporate some particularly heavy, almost death-metal-like elements into their songs, like the guitar in their song "Assassin". Now I barely like death metal but the way they do it in that song really works. cool
