Pink Floyd - Obscured By Clouds

Some tough stuff, you will have to digest there. I am not such a big fan of the early Floyd stuff. Obscured by clouds is a soundtrack and in my opinion does`t work quite well as an album (like most soundtracks). Atom Heart Mother is a classic, but I never really got into it. I mostly concentrate on the Floyd stuff from Meddle onwards....

I picked up the Discovery box set this past year. With a lot of those early albums it had been a long time since I had heard them, and something like More I had never heard before. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed them. But Ummagumma is still a workout. grin

Atom Heart Mother is my earliest Pink Floyd album. I think that the title suite is OK but I'm not a big fan of Alan's Pyschedelic Breakfast. undecided My favourite tracks are the 3 solo compositions, especially Richard Wright's Summer '68, which I think are excellent. smiley

I really hope I haven't made a mistake in buying AHM and OBC. embarassed I was looking in my local HMV for Wish You Were Here but they were the only two Pink Floyd albums they had left on the CD rack, so I bought them both.

I really like both of them. Not as much as I like wish You Were Here, but I still like them. You didn't buy Ummagumma, which could have been a real shock if you didn't know what to expect...

Atom Heart Mother side 1 might take a few listens, and Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast is... an acquired taste tongue tongue tongue tongue But it's very pleasant, anyway smiley

Obscured By Clouds has got some nice songs on it, but it's a real far cry from the next album, Dark Side Of The Moon. Wot's... Uh The Deal is my favourite from the album.

When I was a kid, I had a school friend, who had an older brother, who owned ummagumma. But she was terribly scared of the scream, which can be heard on Careful with that axe, Eugene. Too make sure, she didn`t put on this side of the record by mistake, she wrote the word SCREAM on the label of the record. So she never got traumatized again by it.

My wife owns the cd version of this album and loves it to bits. Not quite my cup of tea, though.

It's a matter of individual tastes.
I happen to like early Floyd, collectively more so than all those popular albums that followed OBC.

The second half of AHM (after the title track) is my second-favourite side of any Floyd album (the "Echoes" side of Meddle being my first).
And "Childhood's End" from OBC ranks among my favourite Floyd tracks.

So don't feel you've made a mistake until you've had a chance to take it all in.

Back in the 70's, a friend of mine who I walked home from school with used to put this on his cassette player, and try and time it so the scream happened while we were passing old people. smiley
