Just downloaded Tales from Topographic Oceans. For those not in the know, it's either the worst or the best album in history, according to most people.

I think that it's somewhere between those 2 extremes. wink

I've listened to it twice. The first time I didn't enjoy it much because it dragged on and on. The second time though, I actually enjoyed it a lot more. But I'd still put it behind the other six albums in the "Yes Album to Tormato" era.

Well, I'll have to side with Down and Out here. Revealing Science is mildly nice, The Remembering is an extreme misnomer, the Ancient is really cool and Ritual is awesome. No idea why it's so hated.

Maybe it's just me but some albums seem to take years before I start to see them in a different light.

I first heard TFTO in the late 70s when I was about 14 and I just couldn't get into it.
While, I rate it a lot higher than I once did, I don't hail it as a masterpiece as some Yes fans are prone to doing.
I really like the first two tracks and I would cite TRSoG as one of my favourites by Yes.
The second half (the 3rd and 4th tracks) I think is OK but I find the first half much more enjoyable.

Because the tracks are so long, I don't know if it's the kind of album you want to absorb all at once, even if you're very familiar with the music.

I just want to use this brief period of Yes discussion to make this point - I love Tormato. It's a lot of fun and has some wonderfully daft and jolly moments. The music has a slightly more accessible feel with shorter songs but it's still magical and beautiful. It's in no way a ground-breaking accomplishment in progressive rock but the music is still very good. Easy to digest yet rewarding all the same.

Here is my current ranking of the seven Yes studio albums that I've listened to:

Fragile
Close To The Edge
Tormato
Relayer
The Yes Album
Going For The One
Tales From Topographic Oceans

I have Relayer, Drama, Tales and Close to the Edge (ranked in that order), and Going for the One is taking years to arrive via post, so where would you recommend I go next? Fragile?

Somebody once wrote on this forum, that Tales From Topographic Oceans suffers from the LP - format. They had too much great material for an album, but not enough for a double lp. Had there been the cd format at the time, they could have reduced the whole thing to one hour and there would have been a mile stone. I have the remaster double cd of it and it includes the first three tracks of the double lp on the first cd. Normally, I just listen to this one.

So you call fifth in a list of only seven albums "far down"? Bearing in mind that there are loads of other Yes albums I haven't heard yet which aren't listed! rolleyes

The ones you mentioned, I would rank as follows:

Close To The Edge
Fragile
The Yes Album
Relayer
Going For The One
Tales From Topographic Oceans
Tormato

But that is just my taste. You are of course free to have your own preferences.
