Down and Out, please reply to my last message - I'm interested to know why you dislike Will Young wink

I didn't answer as I didn't want to dwell on the subject. But since you ask, I despise reality TV shows and hence tend to dislike most singers that come out of them. In the case of Will Young I really cannot stand his voice. But remember, that's just my opinion. wink

Ah... but you misunderstand, you see wink

Will Young is very unique in the "TV superstar" category of singers. Unlike other singers who emerged out of a televised talent show, Will Young declined Simon Cowell's label. That's right - he may have won the X Factor, but he very rightly refused to work for Cowell so he could produce music his own way rather than being controlled like a puppet.

If Will Young had joined Cowell's label, what would have become of him? Remember Leona Lewis? She faded away after all the hype was over, because Cowell dropped her after he made a fortune out of her. The same may have had happened to Young.

But Will Young is still releasing albums, and not because he won a show, but because he's actually taking his career seriously. He isn't one of my favourite singers, but I greatly respect him and his wise decision to be independent, and his "Let it Go" album (2009) is very good IMO. His latest album is a bit of a letdown though.

Actually I think that Will Young won a show called "Pop Idol", beating Gareth Gates in the final. I know that because I used to buy a red top tabloid newspaper! grin Will Young certainly gets a bonus point from me for not joining Cowell's label. smiley But as I said Will Young's voice really annoys me. I was merely surprised that you liked Will Young, hence my original quote with the "shocked" ( shocked ) smiley, which didn't explicitly show any hatred of Will Young. To be honest, and I'm not being patronising here, I sometimes forget how young you are. A lot of the music you like, including Genesis, is more normally associated with old-fogeys - well middle aged folk anyway wink - like me. And I think that is great. smiley So when you mention somebody like Will Young, who probably has a less captive audience on this forum, I am slightly taken aback. I didn't mean anything personal by it. And if you like, I'll PM you a list of all the artists I own CDs by and you can have a laugh at my expense. grin

Just 19 years old... it's rather funny, I know wink

As I've said before, my taste is extremely eclectic. I love every good genre you can possibly name from then to now, mainly rock of course, and I fluctuate between them at random. I mean, it's very unusual, but that's the way it is. I've made many compilations of eclectic music.

You can thank my Dad for my taste, he's taught me well... and you can also thank 20th Century Fox for including the song "Won't Get Fooled Again" in the first trailer for the animated film "Robots" - because that pretty much started it off.

Obviously some bands I've gotten into myself, like Iron Maiden and Def Leppard. And with Muse, well... that was you, DAO, thank you wink

I'm extremely glad to be where I am with music, seriously. I am incredibly thankful. Music is my reason to live nowadays, I just wouldn't be able to enjoy life without it.

No problem NSOV. As regards Muse, I'm probably not a typical fan as I get the feeling that being a band that started in the late 1990s, their fan base is predominantly teenagers and twenty somethings. My first Muse album was Black Holes And Revelations and that blew me away like no other album had done for many years. I'm so grateful that there are some modern bands out there producing great music. smiley

My favourite new act is, and will very likely always be Newton Faulkner, he's only released two albums, but he's just a genius. His first album, Hand Built by Robots, was really good and I played it quite a lot.

But his second album - Rebuilt by Humans - is in my top five albums ever. Rebuilt by Humans is absolutely phenomenal, it's bursting at the seams with brilliant songs, there are no bad tracks whatsoever, and when I first heard it I just knew that it was going into my top ten... and it made it into my top five.

The album's fifth track, If This Is It, is also my second-favourite song ever smiley

He really is just a pure genius...
