There was nothing unusual about Joe. I bought I’m the Man when it came out & it was just normal usage at the time, & the same a few years later when Money for Nothing was a huge hit & nobody thought anything of the "little faggot" line. Remember that when Joe & Mark Knopfler were young homosexuality was a crime here, & being gay wrecked political careers in the 1970s & 1980s. It takes time for attitudes to change & you can’t blame them for reflecting conventional views of their time.

Having not been alive in the 70s and 80s perhaps I'm not in a position to judge exactly. Still, that doesn't stop me (as a gay man) feeling pretty uncomfortable when hearing those lines in 2016.

But now it's the time of night for this:

Was it you or was it me? Or was it he or she?

NB: despite what my name may suggest, I was not born in 1972 tongue

But Knopfler was sending up the blue collar worker types who hated gay people. It wasn't his own opinion.

True, but he couldn’t even release a song with that line now as there’d be a storm of protest from the self-righteously offended who have no understanding of nuance!

Jackson was analysing the way both gay & straight men try to perceive themselves & he may have thought that gays referred to each other as 'faggot' affectionately, the way blacks started using the N word about each other.

I was wondering if that was the reason.

You have to understand the historical context. My parents’ generation was generally wary of gay men, probably because of the criminal stigma. Mine was generally accepting enough for me to have an argument in the early 80s with a contemporary who said he didn’t like gays, but throwaway references like Joe’s were so commonplace that nobody really noticed them. My daughter’s (your) generation is very pro-LGBT. There's been a complete change.

The song Real Men from Night And Day includes the line:

"So don`t call me a faggot not unless you are a friend."

Seems, the faggot issue is one of Joe`s particular ones...

I'm not a fan of that word, though I'd prefer it be used by someone who uses it to identify himself, rather than, say, Mark Knopfler in "Money For Nothing." undecided

FWIW,...Jackson's sexuality has not been definitively identified in any official way. Many suspect he is gay. When I saw him back in the early 90's my friend said he must be gay because of certain interactions she noticed between Jackson and other band members. I can't verify, but neither can I deny.

Anyway, if he is gay, or bisexual, I would say that he is entitled to his commentary.

I've assumed he is gay, ever since those lyrics in "Real Men."

He was married twice so presumably he thought he was straight when he was young.

“Jamie G” on Laughter & Lust suggested he might be gay or bisexual. But then again, straight bands have written gay love songs (e.g. the Kinks’ “Lola” & Franz Ferdinand’s “Michael”).

Anyway, us speculating about it shows he’s succeeded in keeping his private life private, & good on him for achieving that.

That's interesting. smiley A lot of fans are disappointed by the album. I'm read some reviews and most of them claim the album is good in places but uninspired in others. I think I'll check it out after all. smiley
