I like Marbles but I don't think it's as good as people say it is. The songs on it are good, especially the big three, but it's weighted down by a lot of unnecessary, so-so filler, in my opinion. It think it should have been just under 75 minutes long instead of over 95 minutes long. Also, what about Sounds That Can't Be Made? I thought that was a pretty strong album.

For me, there is no filler on Marbles. I like all the tracks, including the four Marbles interludes. My least favourites are The Damage and Drilling Holes, but they're not bad enough to call filler imo.
As for Sounds That Can't Be Made, it's ok, but for me Marillion are now producing safe, 'middle-age men' music. Nowt wrong with that but it's not for me. I imagine their own take on it is: we've all matured as writers and musicians and are now producing our best work' but I want to hear the quirkiness and fire they used to have during the Fish era. Just because he's long gone doesn't mean they still can't produce exciting music which, to me, they don't currently do. rolleyes wink

+1 Not a band for which I rush out to buy their new album. Makes you wonder who the creative force was in the early days; Fish maybe? wink

Hogarth has a tremendous stage presence; that being said, I think nowadays Marillion are better as a live band than they are in the studio.

+1 here too. I won't buy a Marillion album until I've heard it. I've seen them live with Hogarth and he was tremendous vocally so yes, I think they're better live now than in the studio too.

I think Macca was close to his best around this time. smiley

I agree. Great stuff.

Back To The Egg is also a wonderful album that doesn't get nearly enough recognition. Such a great band and Paul's bass lines are fantastic.

Gone back to playing:

Spock's Beard - The First Twenty Years

I've found over the years that SB can be a bit uneven in their output, but, at their very best, they're very impressive and probably make my top ten bands. cool

What's your thoughts on the new song they've recorded for this album, with all current and past members?

I need to listen to it a few more times, but I like it. It's typical Neal in the composition style, with some nice passages in it. I'm glad they got all the current and past members to play on it too, that shows a comforting continuity imo. Think I might end up buying this album, even though I have all the tracks on various albums. They do sound a little different to me, and it's worth it for the new track methinks. I wouldn't normally buy a compilation like this, but I do like this one. I think it flows very nicely from start to finish. cool

I too need to hear it a few more times. There's so much going on in that song, plus 3 vocalists as well.
