Now playing:

Scorpions - Lonesome Crow

Their debut album. Very psychedelic but excellent nevertheless. (Michael Schenker was still with them at this point.) smiley

Just realized that drummer, Jimmy Keegan, performs lead vocals on a couple of tracks. To me, he sounds much better than Ted Leonard.

What's your opinion on it so far Dave? Worth having?

Still in Scorps mood myself, listening again to Lonesome Crow

There are a couple songs I have trouble with - "Minions" and "Get Out While You Can." Plus they've included a cover of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man." Really?! rolleyes

At least when Transatlantic does covers, they're either an entirely separate release from the new album, or they're on a different disc as bonus tracks. But SB have included the song on the same disc as though it's part of the new album.

Minions is too polished and middle-of-the-road contemporary for me, and GOWYC has lyrics that are too repetitious, to the point of being monotonous. The rest of the album is the mighty Beard. Except for the fact that Ted Leonard just isn't a good fit for the band, IMO.

Hearing drummer, Jimmy Keegan's vocals on a couple songs is refreshing after listening to Ted. I think I'm a bit prejudiced against him because Ted really doesn't do anything but sing and play the occasional rhythm guitar bit, and I feel that to be in SB you need to do more than that. NDV and Neal are both multi-instrumentalists. It just seems like he doesn't rank up there with his predecessors.

The highlight on the entire album is Dave Meros' bass playing. He really shines on this album.

Thanks for your review/opinion my friend. I value your thoughts, as always, as I know you're always honest in your assessments. I always enjoy Dave Meros' playing. I think he's underrated. Likewise I think Ryo is underrated too, having emerged somewhat from Neal's shadow once he'd left. I know this is sacrilege to many Beard fans but my favourite SB era is Nick's. I think his voice suited the band tremendously well and, dare I say it, he had the edge over Neal when it came to live performances, again imo. Neal puts his heart and soul into singing but can stray off key sometimes live. Nick might sound a little more conservative but tends to stay in key more. Just my opinion. It would be great if they do some kind of reunion in the future - which is always possible of course. wink
