Good choice NSOV, great album!

Earlier I played something I haven't listened to in yonks:

Sylvan - Posthumous Silence

Great combination of neo prog and metal. smiley

NedFlanders sent me that album quite a while ago, and I haven't yet listened to it. embarassed

In fact, there's quite a few albums I've purchased or acquired but haven't listened to yet, including all three of Haken's albums and several live albums. At the moment I'm going through a weird period where I'm wanting to hear music less than normal. Occasionally I'll check my iTunes library and have a listen to something, while on other days I'll think "I should really listen to that" and then say "Meh..." and procrastinate from doing so. Listening to music isn't like homework, but occasionally I treat it as so. That said, I'm starting to also feel a tad ashamed for listening to my favourite songs over and over, because it discourages me from hearing new stuff. I need to take a massive break from my favourite bands and explore the albums I haven't yet heard and re-hear albums I've heard once.

What I need to do is go through all of the albums I've heard once in the last couple of years, decide on the ones I want to hear again and temporarily toss out the albums that disappointed me (like Supertramp's albums... sorry embarassed). Then, I need to find all the albums I haven't heard at all and listen to them as well, alternating between heard-once and never-heard albums. I also need to do a massive iTunes library clean-up, chucking out everything I no longer care about, because it currently has over 600 albums and at least a quarter of them - like the best of Elton John, the best of Rod Stewart, Simple Minds' albums and loads of 60s and 70s compilations, that I never listen to anymore. My taste in music has changed drastically in the past year. Now, I mostly want to hear little else but prog-related music.

I would say don't feel guilty or ashamed for playing your favourites, after all, they're the ones you like the most so you're going to want to play them more. I agree about having a break from them for a bit however, and giving some newer, less heard stuff a chance. Years ago I realised there are only so many hours in a day, so many days in a week, etc. And we all have other things to do apart from listening to music. I've had long periods over the last forty odd years were I've listened to very little music. I always come back to it however at some point. Think of it this way: there are 365 days in a year (apart from a leap year of course) so you could play 365 different albums once a day for a year and never play the same one twice. Imagine those people who have thousands of albums in their collections. How often do they get to go round all of them? Not very often at all, and that's because we all have our favourites and, of course, want to hear them more than other albums. So don't try to fit everything in. If you want a break, have one, listen to your favourites and be happy and, when you want a change, then put on some new stuff or seldom listened to stuff and see what you think. Some of that stuff could eventually join your favourites list too. wink

Now playing:

That is weird. Why do you feel ashamed? I confess to you frankly, that since around early February, i have almost exclusively listened to It Bites and The Flower Kings. These two bands have grabbed my attention in a way, that no other band did, since I discovered Genesis in 1983. At that time, I didn`t listen to anything else at all (almost) but Genesis for a period of time, that lasted almost two years.

I do not regret that, and I do not feel ashamed. If you discover music, that really touches your soul, you cannot bear listening to anything else but that for a long time.

That is normal and highly satisfying. I wish, there were more bands around, that touch my soul, the way the before mentioned bands do....
