So <goldwynism> How did you love the album? </goldwynism>

Seriously, it would not be my recommendation for 1st exposure, that would be Question of Balance, but I guess chronologically, the correct start point.

I have heard DOFP before but not for a long time. I thought it was a sensible place to start. To be honest, I thought it sounded a bit quaint, especially the spoken passages. I have always loved Nights In White Satin and think it's incredible that it's about 47 years old. shocked Here's a question: Do hard core Moodies fans think that NIWS is overplayed and overrated? Anyway, going forward, I will probably listen to DOFP again, then after that, Question Of Balance. After that, I will rightly or wrongly use progarchives.com ratings as my guide and try some other albums. smiley

Can only speak for myself. Yes, a little overplayed, and not my favourite song by them, yet it does possess some magic, not least the vocal backing. A Moodies strongpoint, they had 4 great vocalists, Ray Thomas and Mike Pinder the deeper voices, Justin in the middle and John at the top. Thus they have a very good choir with multitracking. IF they'd done SSIEB they'd have done the voices themselves, not used a mellotron like Genesis!

Love this guys albums and yet he has done nothing for around 9 years now. I have tried to converse with him on Facebook but he has never responded. Now I am listening to another excellent Dutch artist - Chris - who produced equally melodic neo prog music.

It is a bit like Whiter Shade of Pale in that even now it still sounds great no matter how many time you have heard it. The real issue is that both Procol H and Moodies produced some fab albums yet many still only refer to one or two of their songs. I think NIWS was ahead of its time as was that album and Justin had a big hand in that with the direction the group took from 1967 onwards. It is not my favourite Moodies song either but it is still a classic song that still manages to get my hairs rising, particularly when hearing it in a live setting. Mike Pinder's mellotron is peerless on this song.
