I watched a 2009 movie on NETFLIX called 'FISH TANK'

I think these kids of movies are very clever, it was like a depressing Mike Leigh movie about a 15 year lad girl living in a very rough neighbourhood with a rough family and abusive mother.

Good movie but super depressing and sad.

sad

Also watched the first episode of MAKING OF A MURDERER that everyone is talking about.

I don't think this is a spoiler as it's in the first 10 mins or so, but I was very turned of by the horrific animal abuse the guy had been convicted off when young, makes it hard for me to have sympathy for him.

But there are 9 more episodes so must be much more to the story....still, if somebody is capable of doing that.... undecided

Anybody else here seen it?

I’ve been watching Endeavour since the Genesis-themed episode. I like the way each episode has a main theme & then minor throwaway references e.g. to James Bond. I don’t really know the Great Gatsby which was the main theme of the twins one, but the throwaway was Donald Campbell, given the speed record attempt & pointed use of the phrase “across the lake”.

I’m watching this week’s episode now & it looks like the throwaway could be the White Album (“Is this the Savoy truffle?” asks Inspector Thursday) grin

Recorded it, so will watch at some point. Have to say, I actually prefer this to Morse, despite the fact that John Thaw was so bloody good. Roger Allam manages not to remind me of Peter (Thick of it) Mannion at all, so he is to be commended!

(I don't know Gatsby either!)

I never really watched Morse, but Roger Allam’s always a good character actor, whatever he’s in. Reminds me a bit of a latter-day Warren Clarke, but less ugly!

Endeavour

I sense this Sunday's show will have a Kate Bush theme! The trailer was on while I was at my mum's this evening. The last words spoken by characters in the trailer were: "It's in the trees! It's coming!"

I laughed so much I nearly fell out of my chair. They get more brazen by the episode.

I saw Roger Allam as Falstaff in Henry IV Part One at the Globe Theatre in 2010 which was one of the great days of my life.

I like how people are posting images of what they are watching so...

Has anybody seen the Amazon Prime show:

The Man in the Castle?

Science fiction. Based on the premise that the Nazis won the war, and they run two thirds of of the Americas, and the Japanese run the other third.

I heard it's real good, so I got Amazon Prime, been wanting to for a while anyway, good a 'reason' as any I suppose.

Planning to start watching that soon... probably on Sunday afternoons after the Football Season is over.

Look forward to seeing that one!

Did you notice the Genesis reference in last week’s episode that centred on the supermarket? One of the plot strands was a customer being given too many Green Shield stamps which were common enough in 1967 for that to be a coincidence, but it probably wasn't given the commune leader’s speech at the end: “We give thanks to the earth for her fine fair bounty”. Aisle of Plenty, anyone? wink

Damn! That one slipped past me.

Couple of points about the show generally:

Fred Thursday is, presumably, a nod to the character Joe Friday in Dragnet, both the TV show and the Dan Ackroyd/Tom Hanks film.

John Thaw's (the original Morse in the contemporary series) daughter has returned to Endeavour as the woman who works at the Oxford local newspaper, it was she who unearthed the photo that showed the Madox & Richardson link. She was in series 1.

I thought they did a marvellous job of recreating a 1960's supermarket/shopping precinct, it really took me back to how such a place looked back then.

Oh right, as it's Downton Abbey tonight I guess I won't get to start it today.

My person generally doesn't like science fiction. But when I told him the premise he wanted to try it.

And ever more implausible, but still, what a great episode! Definitely Jurassic Park themed, especially the way the goat tied to the stake was taken by the unseen predator, & the South African big game hunter complimenting the tiger he knew was about to kill him, like Bob Peck saying “Clever girl!” to the velociraptor in the film.

And Roger Allam good as ever, what with beating up the dodgy suspect, waving a petrol flare at a tiger & delivering the best line: “You want me to go into Mr Bright's office and tell him there's a West African leopard cult operating in Oxford?" laugh laugh

Seems I may have jumped the gun a bit, for apparently (I didn't know this) the opening line of the song is a sample from a film, "Night of the demon".

Recorded it, so will probably watch it next weekend, time permitting.
