I remember a time in the early 1970s (which is hard to do): I was probably 12 or 13 years old. A few friends (guys and gals) were playing spin-the-bottle on a trampoline. I spun the bottle and it pointed to a girl named Jane. At that time, the term 'chick,' to reference a cute girl, was fairly new.

We started to kiss and I called her a cute chick. She pulled away because she thought I'd called her a cute chicken. Funny the things you remember as you become more and more senile.

I reiterated that I'd called her a cute chick (not chicken), and so she allowed me to continue kissing her. Nice memory actually.

I know this sounds like it should be in the 'What Puts A Smile On My Face' thread, but I was intrigued by Lily's posting of names she'd rather not be called. Cute chicken is probably among them grin

You would be correct! grin

Funny story COT. On a similar note, my sisters 4 and 6 year old granddaughters told her off for calling them 'chickens' last week. They said 'We are not chickens, we are people!' grin

Whenever a guilty person is rightfully given a prison sentence, there are always those people who come in and say "Just give 'em life!" or "Just kill 'em!". Uhm, no, that isn't how punishment works. Yes, Gary Glitter's actions were despicable, but that doesn't mean the guilty person automatically deserves instant death or life in prison. 16 years in prison I think is a perfectly adequate sentence, and the bloke is 70 anyway, it's not like he's going to have much of a life left after 16 years have passed. Besides, killing guilty people just lets them get away with it. The whole point of prison is to punish the guilty person, to make their life absolutely miserable for an extremely long period of time. If you kill them, they're dead and that's it, their punishment is over. It just annoys me when a person like Gary Glitter gets rightfully punished but the public is never satisfied unless it's a life in prison or death. rolleyes

Not sure if this is the same thing.....but I will always call for life imprisonment for someone who is found guilty of murder. The problem with the UK justice system is that this is rarely the case, with murderers often sentenced to only 15 years which is a disgracefully inadequate punishment for the taking of a life.

Anyone found guilty of murder should be given a life sentence without parole and only leave prison in a wooden box. In my humble opinion of course.

I have kids and I understand and it's because of that I will never support a death penalty in any form. I know how I would feel if it was one of my kids, regardless of the crime..

I agree with this 100%. I'd give them life in solitary, a true deterrent and a fitting punishment. Seems like the establishment with their "human rights for criminals" forget 2 things in this case. 1/ Rights come with responsibilities, if you take a life, you forfeit the right to your own life of freedom, and 2/ it's not only the actual victims life that is taken away, their loved ones suffer too, and if they are of childbearing age, potentially the list of lives lost is endless.

That said, Gary Glitter is not a murderer, and given his age and the crimes concerned, I'd say 16 years is about right.

I too agree with unclealbert. Murderers should definitely get life, especially mass murderers. What I don't get is why people assume every kind of criminal should get life.

I don't agree with mandatory sentences. Every case is different.

True. And Crimes of passion/extreme provocation are exceptions, but cold blooded, totally unjustifiable murder, mandatory life is the only logical choice.

Crimes of passion / provocation can still be murder though can't they? No excuse to kill, unless it's accidental or self defence I think. Then it would be manslaughter.

Of course they can. A crime of passion could stew for weeks or months, and the perpetrator should have time to come to their senses. Thus, in such a case, I'd suggest it was murder, pure and simple. But if it was, for example, a spouse stabbing their partner in a rage at hearing of some betrayal or whatever, there might be a case to argue diminished responsibility.

I rest my case. Bloody handle's cutting into my fingers! grin
