Why do you consider this to be a problem?

I was thinking the same thing. Granted, a pregnant woman should want to quit smoking for the health of the baby, but what's wrong with offering a financial incentive to do so?

Probably it's where the money comes from that's the problem?

So, where does it come from?

You may be right. I wonder if you or Alan or someone would enlighten me about where it comes from. Honestly, I had no idea--as my son would say--that this was a thing.

I read up to £400 in vouchers is being offered.

Yes, where is this money coming from, and it sits wrong with me too. And on a purely selfish level I can't help but think, that nobody offered me money to quit smoking.

Besides, if a person wants to do it they will do it, if they don't want to it won't work. A lot of people will take this money and smoke anyway, I have no doubt in this.

I'm not sure, but sounds like the NHS, as it states it would be "cost effective" for them. Still seems wrong to me though, and other women can be at risk in pregnancy even if they don't smoke or drink.

Well, ultimately, it comes from us, the UK public taxpayer. Surprised to hear US members question this objection to such a policy, as US residents generally (ie, on almost every forum I have ever been on) seem to have a problem with paying benefits to those who are out of work through no fault of their own. Just sayin'!"

Not sure I agree with that…... undecided

And what does that have to do with giving smoking pregnant women money to stop?

Yes, I realise it comes from us. So not fair at all! I just wish pregnant women would give up smoking and drinking. Shouldn't need a bribe.

Yeah....I'm also not quite sure what your point is, particularly considering that it is the UK folk here who are having a problem with this issue.

You make it sound so easy...

Why wouldn't you want to spend a little money now to act as an incentive to help these women break an addiction, which in the long run could save in health care costs many times over for both the woman and her child?

I know you aren't asking me but…. grin

This should be up to family members or friends to give incentive IMO. Not government. It's wrong to ask all of society pay for this.

Now for serious stuff:

I went to the store to buy milk. Came back with Oranges, Bananas and skinny cow ice cream bars and no milk. So cross with my mind nowadays, it's really struggling with focus! angry
