Hi there

Sorry but if you honestly regard training a child how to use a sub-machine gun as responsible then I must be living on a different planet! But hey, what do I know?

And taking kids to a shooting range and training them how to use a sub-machine gun which then blows someone's head off is "responsible"? The lunatics really have taken over the madhouse!

No one here is disagreeing with you on that. Once again, who ever said that was responsible? Not me, or anyone else I know. Common sense tells us that's irresponsible regardless of the horrible tragedy that occurred.

FTR, I don't think anyone should be able to own these types of weapons. They should be for police/military personnel only,IMO.

On reflection it is probably a good thing that I didn't have a twelve bore shotgun at the side of my bed when my house was burgled and my car stolen a few years ago.

I WOULD now be serving a life sentence.

Unfortunately, the problem with gun laws in America is that not all people who have them are as responsible as you, Eric. And because of that and the proliferation of high powered weapons available at ones finger tips, tragedy is always around the corner. I know it's not your fault, but that is the reality of the situation...

Well to tell you the truth there are many people here who think, and feel exactly as I do, and are responsible, upstanding gun owning citizens. That's why I commented in the first place. Sure there are some wackos too. Just as there are in every walk of life, but we shouldn't all be lumped in with them just because we are afforded the same rights.

I, and a lot of people I know agree with you about the high powered automatic weapons. There needs to be something done about that, but one of the problems there is a lot of people feel it's a slippery slope, and once you take those away, it won't be long til they come after the rest. I don't agree with that but I understand why people think that way. I wish I had a solution but all I can do is not buy, own, or use one, and take a stand against them while still standing up for my rights to bear arms. I've never fired one at a range, have no interest in doing so, and in turn don't support those manufacturers in my own way.

I'm all for strict gun laws, and not making it easy to own one. Including mental health screening, and any other training type of test before someone is able to buy a gun. It's really not all that easy to get a permit in some States, while in others it is much easier. Some strict, National legislation would help,IMO.

As you would be doing if you lived in a lot of states here in the US. The laws vary from state to state, but in general, you'd have to be in fear for your life and dealing with an armed person. Some states just the fear would be enough but in my state of New Jersey, the law is really strict. Even if a jury believed a person feared for their life, if you shot, and killed an unarmed intruder, you'd most likely serve some time. Maybe not life, but you'd certainly not get off Scott free. You could but not likely. It really depends on the facts in the case.

Maybe you missed this post from eric in response to you on the last page:

Who said that's responsible? It's not in my book, nor is it with anyone else I know. There's no need for a child or anyone other than a police/military person to be training with a weapon like that. That said the fault lies with the parent of that child, and the trainer, imo, not the child. They should've never been put in that position.

To try and blame responsible gun owners for that tragedy is way off the mark amd just a flat out misuse of the word responsible. In fact it's the exact opposite of responsible,IMO.

Hi there

Well maybe it is the US lawmakers who are irresponsible then and time that the ludicrous fifth ammendment was ammended again perhaps? No one has the right to bear arms and kill or haven't you heard of the Ten Commandments?

People have armed, and defended themselves for centuries.

The problem isn't with the SECOND amendment IMO,because it allows us to defend ourselves. The problem is criminals getting guns illegally, therefore making responsible people who might never want to own a gun, feel the need to have one. It creates this sort of viscous cycle that gets bigger and bigger exponentially.

If the 2nd amendment was abolished or even amended, criminals would still have their guns. They have them illegally now so that's not going to change. Why should law abiding citizens be put in danger, and put in a position of breaking the law to feel safe, or defend themselves?

It's the laws that need changing. Tougher punishments for crimes committed with guns, and illegal possession of one. Mental health screenings for people looking to get a permit. Classes to learn how to use a gun should be mandatory the same way we have to take a written, and road test before we get a drivers license. These are just a couple of things that would help,IMO.

NYC has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, and since enacting them, armed crimes have dropped significantly. Anyone possessing a gun without a permit in NYC automatically gets a year in jail. If it's discharged even on accident they get more time, and if a crime is committed with one they're looking at ten years tacked onto their sentence, minimum. Even if you bought that gun legally in the state where you live, and have a permit there you can't take it into NYC. NYC not only has tough gun laws but it's extremely difficult to get a permit for a gun there.

It's very easy to spot a problem, and moan, and groan about it. Anyone can do that. It's finding a solution that's difficult, and takes special people to step up, and resolve them. For every person who digs their feet in, and says no one should have a gun or the right to bear arms and is breaking a commandment there's someone on the other side just as determined, or doesn't believe in the Ten Commandments. Are their beliefs wrong because they're different?

Finding a middle ground that makes sense is what needs to be done but unfortunately that's much easier said than done.

When the gun laws were changed here in the nineties there was a two year amnesty where the guns were handed in to authorities in exchange for cash. After that period, anyone caught with illegal firearms faced fines or jail time. It's on record as being a success that since the terrible Port Arthur massacre not one single gun massacre has occurred in this country whereas in the decade leading up to the massacre there were several...

Now, I'm not saying this could work in the US as our societies are different. I'm just pointing out that it can work..

Hi there

Yes, you are correct but I think the US is the only country that has the right to arm yourself enshrined in its constitution and it is the failure to address the need for that law to be changed in such a manner as to make incidents such as those which we see all too often on the news happening but there is a snowball's chance in hell of that happening whilst the US administration has its nuts firmly held by the NRA and the likes.
