I hate the idea of being referred to as "British" there is no such thing in my book.

Sigh. Here's yet another annoying thing about this country that won't go away. The rampant "I'm not British, I'm English/Scottish/Welsh/Northern Irish/Cornish/Liverpudlian/etc" thing. It's ridiculous. How can there be "no such thing"? A person who lives in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland IS British. Everyone here is, just like everyone who lives in the United States of America is an American, and everyone who lives in the Russian Federation is Russian. What's wrong with being two things? The never-ending "I'm not this, I'm that and only that" belief that such a large number of UK citizens have is another hyper-nastionalistic problem that makes us increasingly divided and sometimes bitter. Sorry but it comes off as arrogant and deluded to me, on the same level as a drug addict denying that they're an addict, even though they clearly are. There's nothing wrong with having more than one demonym, and if more and more people accepted that, society would improve, I'm sure of it.

We have the same dilemma here in the states. If you're an American citizen, you're American, plain and simple; not African-American, German-American, Canadian-American, etc.

Oh, and then there's the native American thing...let it, go will ya? Even American Indians are...American!

Enough with the hyphenated origins. It only serves to divide us.

"American" can get confusing though. Especially when people say things like "hey, I'm not American, I'm Canadian!" wink

I claim to be born British-Canadian because in Canada you're most likely of British origin or French origin. At least that was the case when I was young. I'm sure that's changed nowadays.

Now that I'm an American citizen, I consider myself American, even though I still carry my Canadian citizenship.

There's certainly nothing wrong with being proud of your origin, but at some point you need to embrace the place where you've chosen to live out your life.

Reminds me of a story a friend told me when she attended a wedding in Ireland.
She was in a pub, and people kept referring to her as American.
No, she replied, she was Canadian.
The pub goers were fairly insistent though: US or Canada, there’s no difference, you're all Americans.
She replied, oh yeah, just like you're all British.
The response, she said was "perfect" - grim-faced, dead silence.

That's a funny story. It is true that Canada and America are both situated in North America. For that matter, Canada has much more territory than the USA. Maybe we should be calling ourselves American-Canadians.

I wouldn't suggest you try that line of reasoning where I grew up! wink

If I am British, it's in a sense of shared language and certain aspects of culture - art, media, music etc.

I'm certainly not geographically British but I am a UK citizen (or subject, in as much as that's still relevant).

I'm also Northern Irish, an Ulsterman, a Belfast boy, a Westie, a Nordie and an Irishman (depending on who you ask).

I'm also Eddie, which is much more important IMO! smiley

I disagree with all of you... okay, most of you.

If someone wants to call himself an Irishman or an Italian-American or an Apache or a San Franciscan... what business is it of yours? Live and let live. Don't tell people what they may call themselves, what they may or may not be offended by, what music they may listen to, where they may send their charitable donations, etc.... and we'll all be better off.

"Division" and "diversity" are not the same thing. The first implies separation and isolationism... the second connotes community and individuality. That's the one I prefer.

Wish we had an NHS here in the states. Obama tried but the damn Congress wouldn't have anything to do with it. Their pockets are way too deep with contributions from HMOs and Pharmaceutical Companies.
