The news that some of today's most obvious modern British pop stars (Olly Murs, Ed Sheeran, One Direction, etc.) are going to re-record the Band Aid song Do They Know It's Christmas?. Honestly... is this really what we've been reduced to? Why has British pop culture ran so dry of ideas? This is the fourth version of this song that they've made. Our music scene is a joke at the moment, especially with tacky crap like The X Factor still going strong. undecided

I wouldn't bet on it myself, people may be bored with it. I heard Adele hasn't agreed to be on it, but is giving money to Oxfam's ebola appeal instead.

The problem is that the focus has gone from the quality of the music and quality of the song to the quality of the look and the quality of the voice being used.

I think you're missing the point here.

Hi there

It has some stiff competition this year though. What really got on my tits was the BBC's crass decision not to allow the fundraising record for the Royal British Legion to be playlisted! Now THAT is a cause I can whole heartedly support!

That's how many feel here in America. We're no longer the great country we once were. Lots of crime, hunger and joblessness, yet the charity seems to go everywhere else.

I sympathise. Not enough food banks here for the hungry, and still we're encouraged to give it away. Try and make you feel like you're really mean if you refuse too. I give a little where I can to who I choose anyway.

I am of course very thankful to have been born into a prosperous first world nation, and I definitely wouldn't want to move out of the UK permanantly.

However, I really do feel as though this country's culture has really become painfully boring and predictable over time. UK culture seems to have been reduced to just four types of things:

1. Reminding ourselves of how wonderfully British we are at every opportunity. "We're the country that brought the world The Beatles, Doctor Who, the Queen, and Harry Potter! Rule Britannia, we're so eccentric and so different to every other country!"
2. Complaining about the weather constantly. I am really the only Brit who is sick of the whole "We're in Britain so it's always raining" thing? We get plenty of sun throughout the year - more than people realise - and yet it's rarely appreciated or acknowledged by people here.
3. The public's endless yammering about The X Factor, football, tea, pubs, soaps, the BBC, political parties, naughty celebrities, chavs, our many accents, etc.
4. Our awful, snarky humour. Dear God. I mean, okay, we've shown the world that we can be comical and make good jokes. But do we have to snort and heckle at EVERY news piece imaginable? It doesn't matter what kind of news it is, we'll find a rude, groan-inducing, sometimes xenophobic joke for it. Because "we're so British, it's just the way we are".

I wouldn't say I'm ashamed to be British, but at the moment I'm certainly not as proud of it. undecided We have become our stereotype, always acting like we're so clever and so full of fresh ideas, when really we're just a pale, bland imitation of the beautiful country we used to be. sad

Hi there

I hate the idea of being referred to as "British" there is no such thing in my book. Me, I'm English and bloody proud of it!

And I do agree with charity beginning at home. We have homeless and hungry people right here on our own doorsteps and that problem should be addresed before one more penny goes overseas. Maybe the money spent on unwarranted wars could be better spent this way and I lnow the UK isn't the only place where this is an issue.

Oh well, I can dream can't I?
