There is no good reason for terrorism. Whether it's here or anywhere, people with killing on their mind are going to get their hands on the weapons to do it. Last I looked France has some pretty strict gun laws and that didn't stop the killing of innocents eating in restaurants or attending a concert.

Me, I'm just glad I can defend myself and my loved ones in my own home if some crazy with bad intent has designs on doing anything to the innocent people there.

Trump's an idiot, and that quote by Hodges is just as idiotic,IMO.

America has not made the killing of children bearable. Most Americans are appalled at that, and just because there's no unanimous call to repeal the 2nd amendment doesn't mean Americans think the killing of children is bearable. Not only is Hodges statement idiotic, it's grandstanding for effect and not based on truth or reality,IMO.

The threat of terrorism isn't what makes me sad. It's the Sandy Hooks and the Collumbines etc etc etc...terrorism is far down on the list

Those killings were terrorism,IMO. Domestic, but terrorism none the less.

Sorry, but in my opinion the "slippery slope" argument is a huge part of the problem. Extreme gun-rights advocates (see, not calling them "nuts") are trying to convince you that someone wants to take your guns away. What possible evidence have you seen that your rights to defend your family through legal gun-ownership are threatened in any way? How does denying gun purchases to suspected terrorists lead to you having your guns taken away? In what way does requiring background checks at gun shows make you believe that "they're" coming for your guns?

We create legislation to correct serious deficiencies in our societal policies, and the "where do we draw the line" argument never makes sense. There is no difference here to the argument that same-sex marriage laws will lead to people marrying their cats.

And I'm sure you realize that the slippery slope argument works both ways. The Second Amendment does not allow you to own weapons-grade plutonium. Or sarin gas. Or a tank. By the same token, no one is coming to confiscate your personal firearm.

Dan Hodges knows all about grandstanding Ė heís well-known for writing a sanctimonious article every few weeks about why heís leaving the Labour party, then rejoining, then repeating the process ad nauseam. But what he seems to be saying here, however pompously, is that whenever we hear of another massacre in the US now we just shrug & think itís par for the course, & wonder why Trump & co are so worked up about San Bernardino in particular.

I'm all for the things you mentioned, and here in N.J. have gone through it along with some other screenings in order to purchase a gun.

Show me how our NJ gun laws aren't enough. Sorry but until I hear what exactly those additional things are, I'm not convinced they aren't a step towards taking my guns away. Let me see the legislation. I'd be happy to offer my opinions. If we're talking automatic weapons, I've already said I see no reason for a civilian to own one. You want a drug screening? Pass me the pee cup. You want limits on the amount of guns one person can own, I don't have a big problem with that. You want a field target test similar to a road test for getting a driver's license, I'm front and center all for that. Tougher mental health screenings? Absofrigginlutely! Beyond those, I'm gonna have to see what they are before I jump on board.

I don't need anyone else trying to "convince" me of anything, and frankly find that a bit insulting. I can think for myself, thank you very much and whether you agree with my thinking or not, doesn't make my thinking any less valid than yours. The concern people have with the slippery slope is real. Doesn't matter if you agree with them feeling that way or disagree with the premise altogether. The concern about it still exists.

While others might need clarification on the 2nd Amendment, I assure you I do not, and don't really appreciate the Plutonium or sarin gas comment. In fact I'm surprised you would make it.

My comments about plutonium and sarin gas are clearly hyperboles used to make an obvious point. There is no reason for you to become defensive and take them as a personal attack against you. My comments about "slippery slope" arguments were clear enough, as was my invitation for you to share any credible evidence that legitimate gun-control advocates want to confiscate your guns.

I leave it there. I've considered you a forum friend and have no desire to inflame things any further over this divisive and emotional issue.

Well let's see, in the late 60's in response to increasing crime, federal law prohibited interstate firearms transfers except among licensed manufacturers, dealers, and importers. Making it harder to purchase a gun. That in effect is taking guns away,IMO.

Then in the 70's automatic weapons and things like sawed off shotguns were prohibited. Again, taking guns away.

How about in the mid 70's Washington DC's law to make it illegal for a civilian to own a gun or have a handgun in their home? Pretty much put the kabosh on self defense and is what lead directly to the US vs Heller which reversed that in 08. Clearly that was an attempt to "take our guns away".

Seems to me those legitimate gun control measures did indeed go after getting guns. Personally, I don't have a problem with any of those measures (except the DC Firearms Act) It doesn't mean I won't have a problem with new measures.

Once again, let me see what the actual legislation reads that the "legitimate gun control advocates" want. How can I comment on or prove something when I have no idea what proposals you're talking about? How can I be sure these new measures wonít go after my guns when I haven't seen what these measures are? I don't think you or anyone else can be sure they won't, the same way I can't be sure they will or at least try to. They might not specifically come after my guns but they very well could open that door a crack.

Surely if you've been following this issue you've seen some of the groundswell to go after the 2nd Amendment once again. Thankfully the Supreme Court ruled in 08 for a civilians right to bear arms in their own home, but it seems to me there's support out there to challenge that. Anything that could potentially overturn that is something I'm against whole heartedly.

I'll reserve future comment on that until I see exactly what measures are proposed, and make my own mind up on whether I agree with them or not. I certainly don't need anyone like the NRA to speak or think for me.

Well this "gun nut" thinks most of your assumptions from far away are off base, and just flat out wrong.

Excuse me, I never referred to YOU as a gun nut. I said "you" as in "them". The term "you" wasn't directed at anyone here, I wasn't saying "All you gun nuts on this forum." I was saying "All you gun nuts out there".

That said, reading back my comment, I guess I can see why it might have been taken the wrong way. embarassed

Well it seemed to me you were referring to anyone who owned a gun or was against having it taken away as a "gun nut". Maybe that's not what you meant but it sure came off that way.

Well to me, a "gun nut" is the absolute extreme end of the anti-gun control people. These are the dangerously paranoid people who own arsenals of automatic weapons and are terrified they will be taken away, compare Obama to Hitler and believe that if he "bans guns" he'll have full power over the U.S. Consitution, claim mass shootings are either acted-out hoaxes or government-planned mass murders, believe owning guns gives them ultimate freedom and the right to kill whoever they feel deserves it, think everyone should be armed at all times, buy guns for their children... this sounds like a massive stereotype but there really are people like this out there, and being the vocal minority they show up a lot in the comment sections of videos or articles about gun control, and the comments they leave are as scary as hell. Then there's this video...

I'm not sure if you have thought of it this way Eric, but to the rest of the World, the second amendment is bizarre. I can see it would be different when you have grown up with it.

Things like this don't help the second amendment position:

Actually Liliy, no I haven't thought of it that way, and not being mean or rude or anything but I honestly don't care what the rest of the world thinks about it. The same way I don't care if they approve of my religious beliefs, what music I like or what car I drive.

The 2nd Amendment is found in The Bill Of Rights in our Constitution. I value every single one of those rights and it doesn't matter to me if other countries or their people like or agree with any of them. They are what makes our country great,IMO, and they are there for ALL the people here, with no exceptions.

It's like the saying about the 1st Amendment. I might not like what someone says but I'll fight to the end for their right to say it. Same with burning a flag. I hate that, but know it's an American's right to do it. It's covered under freedom of speech.

Some places don't agree with that either and think it's bizarre. I couldn't imagine living someplace without those rights and freedoms, the same way I couldn't imagine not being able to defend myself or loved ones in my own home. I'm not asking to walk down the street with a gun in a holster, Wild West style, I just don't want someone coming around my place with bad intent. I'll never change my stance on that regardless of anyone else's view. I might (emphasis on might) relent if a loved one didn't want a gun in the house but I'll never relent on wanting my Constitutional right to own one.
