I disagree with this premise. There is more to sound quality than just S/N ratio, and cars are generally getting quieter in comparison to previous models.

Still, for the most part, cars have not typically come with decent factory audio set ups, and I don't believe that many or most people who purchase a car put such things into high priority. Ignoring after market installations, in-car audio is just there for background music and traffic reports on the radio. Add to this the current adaptation for portable devices, the standard audio sources seems to have become either MP3 files or compromised FM/satellite broadcast signals.

But these days more car manufacturers are offering upgraded audio packages which include higher quality head units, better amplification, and dedicated speaker components. What this means is that you can get more out of your car audio gear if you make the effort.

Having said all that, I recently purchased a new car with an upgraded audio system. For months I've only been listening to the radio, either FM or satellite broadcasts. It sounded good. Nothing spectacular, but a step up from my old car which also had a decent factory unit. Last week I finally got around to playing a CD, which I was certain would give a better outcome than the radio, but I didn't expect to hear what I did. It is by far the best sound I've ever heard in a factory car audio system; natural, open, detailed...spooky good, without the harsh brightness that can come with hyped up cheap gear, and a bottom end that was solid but not overblown into muddiness. It exceeded all my expectations, and I can be fairly picky when it comes to these things.

The point to all of this is that, yes, playing a CD will make a difference, depending upon if you at least have a good unit to start with. You will hear the extra information on the disc compared to a compromised MP3 file or the radio. It will sound better, despite any concerns about intrusive car noise.

And this experience has got me seriously thinking about purchasing a portable unit that can play hi-rez audio files. Better car audio isn't that difficult or costly to achieve.

CDs have slightly better sound quality than an iPod plugged into the socket in my car, but when it comes to the practicalities of changing the music while youíre driving, itís a toss up as to whether itís harder to find the CD you want in the driverís door pocket, prise open the case & put the old one away, or to remove the iPodís headphones, plug it into the dash, & fiddle around with its rather sensitive dial finding the playlist you want. On short journeys I tend to stick to the CD & flicking between radio stations.

I'm not an audiophile, but as someone who spends 2-3 hours a day in my car I'm quite pleased playing my CDs on the Bose system in there. For many years I've always taken at least one CD with me whenever I've test driven a car... usually A Trick of the Tail. cool

Interestingly, Trick is the album, either LP or CD, that I play to inaugurate any new piece of stereo equipment. So, one morning last week I grabbed the CD (original mix...I'm not a heathen) to play on my way to work. I must have sat in the driveway for about five minutes just listening to DOAV. It's always great hear a fresh sound from something so familiar. cool

I agree. S/N isn't the be all and end all, gritty sounding music with no background noise would be pointless. smiley

We don't have Sirius/XM here, but we do have DAB, which often runs as low as 64 k/b sec - a waste of time, frankly.

I have CD, but not MP3, I use a Sony Walkman, with a proper line out, and Atrac files, which are so much better sounding, and gapless, so segued albums sound as they should.

Luckily, my car has decent speakers, 6.5 inch woofers in front, 6x9 in the back. There's a track on David Grey's white ladder which made me think the car was faulty. I could feel a vibration in the seat, and the rear view mirror was blurred! wink

Non-standard head unit, a Sony, as the Clarion that came with it as standard had no inputs.

I tend to use my Walkman in random mode, if something comes on I don't like (Unlikely, it's my music!) I can find the next button easily. I've seen/known too many people have accidents fiddling with the audio gear or phone.

I was just deciding what CD to take with me to test some speakers, then I saw this post. Thanks. grin

When you guys speak of a "Walkman" you refer to a CD player? huh Quite confusing because in Germany we adopted Walkman as a word for a portable cassette player only while a portable CD player is a Discman.

I canít speak for anyone else but I always use the word Walkman because it was the device that came first. The name stuck, even when a cd version came out. It's still used the exact same way for portable music, so I never really gave it much thought.

Here's a similar comparison. My favorite football team is the NY Giants, and in 1976 they built, and started playing in a stadium called Giants Stadium. A couple of years ago a new stadium was built, right across the parking lot. They sold the naming rights to it, and it's named MetLife Stadium. Myself and just about every Giant fan I know call the new stadium Giants Stadium, or the new Giants Stadium. It's habit. We know it's a different building, but it's the building on the same grounds as the old one, and is where our team plays.

I'm sure the people at MetLife don't appreciate paying all that money and still have people use the old name but it's hard to change from what came first, at least for me.

You saw Henry's post about Trick before my post about Trick? What do you, read threads backwards, or are you just ignoring me?

And what if it isn't even a Sony? I had a portable disc player made by Aiwa. I just called it "my tunes".

No. The Sony portable Cd player was the Discman. The Walkman of which I speak is the WALKMAN (Capital letters to be correct, Sony used this to differentiate from cassette players) NW-A series. 1000, 1200 and 3000. I have 2 1200's and a 1000.

This is it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sony_Walkman_products#NW-A_Series

The one device/computer comment is nonsense. I use all 3 with the one, though this may be due to Sonicstage updates (I have the final version) or firmware updates (All mine are latest version and added screensavers)

Really? huh

I would think my explanation pretty much covers other brands too. Why would I differentiate for a brand if I wouldn't for the model? tongue

Alls I'm saying is a Walkman is a Sony. Sure, plenty of folks call any portable listening device a Walkman. Others may think it's like calling something a Twinkie even if when only the Little Debbie-equivalent.
