This may e a boring story, but that reminds me of a technique my person's grandkids learned in school. When they start to freak out because they forgot their lunch box or show lace comes undone or something (we are talking 3 year olds here) the teacher will say "now, is this a small problem or a big problem?' and they talk it out for perspective.

When they came to Florida in the winter the little one ran into the elevator and the doors closed and she was in there alone, she freaked! Once we got in there and couldn't calm her, we said 'is this a small problem or a big problem' she looked at us like we were insane and said through sobs 'A BIG problem of course!'

Good story. smiley

They're really only unhealthy if you eat about 12 of them each day. Or are you under the impression that young and healthy people never indulge in the odd treat?

Here's one I seem to keep running into lately:

I go to a restaurant (fast-food, or other chain place) and find that the menu has been changed... and the one thing I went there for has been discontinued!

Not really Henry. One of those things has pretty close to, if not more than the recommended daily amount of sugar in them.

They wouldn't be entirely unhealthy if that's all the sugar someone would eat in a day, but something tells me if they like these, it's not the only sugar they get in a day. wink That my friend makes these not exactly a healthy treat.

Once in a while, sure, it's not going to hurt much but one a day sure would,IMO.

Perhaps more annoying is the fact that, according to TV ads, every product on the planet is only consumed by attractive young people. Except of course for products used to address erectile dysfunction, bladder control issues, and other aging/health-related matters. Those are only used by extremely attractive middle-aged people. tongue

I don't understand if you're agreeing with me or not.

As I said, having one on occasion is not necessarily a bad thing, but indulging regularly would be an issue.

My point though is that I believe it unfair to demonize a particular item of food if you are not considering a whole load of other factors that are more significant, such as lifestyle, exercise, and general diet.

Obviously, you are not familiar with the world of advertising... grin

I may be a bit behind the times. My marketing degree was obtained at a time when the three most brilliant people in the world were Sam Walton and Ben and Jerry. cheesy

I'm disagreeing with the point about eating 12 of them being the only way they are unhealthy.

Anything that is close to or above the RDA by eating one of them is unhealthy because it contributes too much to going over that RDA,IMO.It's unrealistic to think anyone would not get any more sugar someplace else in their daily diet, and that's where this gets unhealthy.

I do agree with you though that having one on occasion isn't a big deal or necessarily unhealthy. It's having one a day that is,IMO. Or twelve. wink

I thought my exaggeration was fairly obvious. Any sort of overindulgence can be an issue. But the ad itself doesn't encourage that in any way.

Let's be realistic, many of us have our occasional indulgences. We allow ourselves that without worrying about the RDA. We know full well that it may not be the most healthy alternative, but it's less of an issue if one is maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle. The particular item of food is not the issue.

I'm not demonizing the bar, I'm demonizing advertising! Why don't they state the things we are saying, about moderation etc. Nope, no consequences whatsoever is the message.

I wouldn't be surprised to see those little disclaimers soon for snack commercials, just like they do for everything else.... Drug ads (my favorite: "Do not take Levitra if you are allergic to Levitra")... Car ads (a Nissan is flying through the air, and on the screen it says "Do not attempt--cars cannot fly"). Then there's the really infuriating ones, like "Lease a Buick for only $149 a month," and in tiny print it says, "$7959 due upon signing."

On the other hand, you're not going to turn me against pretty girls eating ice cream... two of my favorite things. (And no, I'm not a "horndog.")
