It was a huge seller. Dan Castellaneta (Homer Simpson) voiced the Genie after Robin Williams backed out.

I guess you have a point. I just think this new "Disney movie remake" era is going to be overkill. In fact, remakes are so enormously popular now that I'm starting to get tired of them. I can understand remaking a movie if it's very old and deserves a shiny modern update, but now they're seemingly just remaking anything and everything that was once popular.

Here's an article:

I couldn't agree more. There's been a spate of remakes of movies from little more than 30 years before, it's almost always a disappointment. Take for example, my pet hate, The Italian Job. The original was inspired to the point of being freakish. I mean, who would cast Michael Caine, Noel Coward and Benny Hill in a movie? But it worked. Perfectly. Then came the remake, which was a disgrace, pure and simple.

The hype the new Thunderbirds is getting. Wish they'd left it alone. Lady Penelope looks wrong to me!

Hum, what do you guys think of remakes in general? We continental Europeans are kind of used to the fact that every successful movie is followed by an instant remake from the US which never matches the original in quality grin

I am often surprised to see an American movie, and then to discover that it is a remake of a recent European film. Youse guys should do a better job of distributing your films globally. tongue

Here's an interesting article about the Hollywood habit of constantly remaking non-US movies: http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/movies/original-sin-hollywood-addicted-to-remaking-foreign-films-20100923-15okb.html

Quote: "Foreign-language films largely have short runs in art-house theatres, if any, and have limited promotional backing compared with the Hollywood remakes."

So the problem is not "us" doing too little distribution. Foreign films are available in the US, they just don't get the promotion needed to get noticed.

Do people still eat wonder bread I wonder? grin

I still love fresh white baguette (even though I don't eat it for weight control, but if it didn't make us fat I would eat it gluten and all!) , but wonder bread, yikes!

Hehe wink There's a wonderful wikipedia article about German cuisine, let me take the liberty of citing the paragraph about bread:
Quote:
Bread (Brot) is a significant part of German cuisine. About 600 main types of breads and 1,200 different types of pastries and rolls are produced in about 17,000 bakeries and another 10,000 in-shop bakeries.

Bread is served usually for breakfast (often replaced by bread rolls) and in the evening as (open) sandwiches, but rarely as a side dish for the main meal (popular, for example, with Eintopf or soup). The importance of bread in German cuisine is also illustrated by words such as Abendbrot (meaning supper, literally evening bread) and Brotzeit (snack, literally bread time). In fact, one of the major complaints of the German expatriates in many parts of the world is their inability to find acceptable local breads.

Regarding bread, German cuisine is more varied than that of either Eastern or Western Europe. Bread types range from white wheat bread (Weißbrot) to grey (Graubrot) to black (Schwarzbrot), actually dark brown rye bread. Most breads contain both wheat and rye flour (hence Mischbrot, mixed bread), and often also wholemeal and whole seeds such as linseed, sunflower seed, or pumpkin seed (Vollkornbrot). Darker, rye-dominated breads, such as Vollkornbrot or Schwarzbrot, are typical of German cuisine. Pumpernickel, a steamed, sweet-tasting bread, is internationally well known, although not representative of German black bread as a whole. Most German breads are made with sourdough. Whole grain is also preferred for high fiber. Germans use almost all available types of grain for their breads: wheat, rye, barley, spelt, oats, millet, corn and rice. Some breads are even made with potato starch flour.

Germany's most popular breads are:
Rye-wheat (Roggenmischbrot)
Toast bread (Toastbrot)
Whole-grain (Vollkornbrot)
Wheat-rye (Weizenmischbrot)
White bread (Weißbrot)
Multigrain, usually wheat-rye-oats with sesame or linseed (Mehrkornbrot)
Rye (Roggenbrot)
Sunflower seeds in dark rye bread (Sonnenblumenkernbrot)
Pumpkin seeds in dark rye bread (Kürbiskernbrot)
Roasted onions in light wheat-rye bread (Zwiebelbrot)

"In fact, one of the major complaints of the German expatriates in many parts of the world is their inability to find acceptable local breads." - Oh yes. So true. In Germany it is just the most normal thing to eat bread for breakfast and the impossibility to find proper bread in the USA was indeed a nuisance. A friend of mine lived in England and had the same complaint. Real bread seems to be unknown in these places. I don't know enough about other countries; in the US they had at least Mexican bread which wasn't that bad. Still, far from what I consider normal. Also I can't see why bread should make you fat as many of my American friends claim, I think this must be due to what they see as "bread" which is imo rather something like toast. Sorry, not trying to be mean but you don't know what bread is unless you've been to Germany (or Austria or Switzerland) wink Same goes for beer by the way grin
