It can be quite confusing what people refer to as country music. My ex used to state she hates country music, we had the same conversation about it several times which always went:
Me: Come on, you like some country music, Johnny Cash for example or Dolly Parton...
She: That's old country music! Yes I like old country music but I hate country music!
Me: huh

I take back part of my last post. I do like Johnny Cash so if that is considered country then it all doesn't suck. wink

I don't know about that. I've been to a lot of places and never heard the Allmans, Outaws or Skynyrd referred to as Country but I'll take your word for it.

As for what I think "bad" country music is, it's simple; ALL of it! grin To me good country music is an oxymoron. wink

You've never heard Southern rock called Country rock?

Nope. I've only ever heard it called Southern Rock. In fact I've never heard of the term Country Rock. It's either one or the other around here. I've heard of Alt Country but never country rock or the bands mentioned as being called country.

If you Google Country Rock, you'll find all the bands I mentioned.

Here in SoCal, I have always called it Country Rock. It's also called Southern Rock smiley

I believe you, and like I said, I'll take your word for it. I just have never heard that term. It's never been called that around here, at least on any of the rock radio I listened to growing up or among the people I hang/hung with.

Ummm maybe rock? I don't make the call but that was my thinking. Hell, you said yourself what people refer to as country can be quite confusing! rolleyes

Just so I don't make another mistake, is Elvis considered a country music star or rock and roll star?

I can understand where Eric's coming from. Johnny Cash did perform some blues rock with Carl Perkins and Derek and the Dominos on the Johnny Cash show. Great video on youtube.

Um. Not trying to downtalk the variety every artist offers. But I don't know if anybody in history is more associated with "rock'n'roll" than Elvis. (Granted, with the sellout of rock'n'roll too.) Likewise Johnny Cash and country music. Is this a cultural thing? As I said above, my ex, a hillbilly from Tennessee, never thought of Johnny Cash in the first place when "country music" was mentioned. However, I have played in a country band for a few years here in Germany and naturally we had 10-minute medley of Johnny Cash songs in our repertoire. A country band that doesn't play Johnny Cash is not a country band. A rock'n'roll band, okay, they might get away playing only Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis etc. while skipping Elvis to point out they play only the true stuff, but it would be a little odd.

The way you put it is as if you questioned if King Crimson is really prog and if AC/DC is really rock.

No, not at all. I just never thought Johnny Cash was straight up country only. Since you posted he was, I thought I'd ask about Elvis since I've always thought he was R&R but thought maybe some thought he was a bit country also. I wasn't being sarcastic, I was asking an honest question.

Ok, I see your point. Yes of course, you can't nail down any of the two on one genre if you're honest. Still artists often get crammed into one genre only. Maybe we should reverse the question: who is the first artist that comes to mind when you think of country music? To me it's Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton before any other artist. I don't know about you but some people I know will strongly disagree with me.
