I’ve experienced it just the once in Germany, it was good fun and the costumes were great, but I can see why some of our friends give it a miss if you have it year after year – days of loud street parties and processions...

We will take the family though once we are pretty sure that our youngest won’t get freaked out by the masks and costumes – particularly some of those grotesque traditional wooden masks!

Here in Britain though we just eat pancakes, for added excitement we will sometimes put different toppings on them though…

No Carnival here. There is a Carnival procession in Weymouth in August though. Lots of floats to watch which is great fun.

I was in Weymouth for New Year in the early 90’s, I thought it a lovely place and we had a great time. Nearly everyone in town on New Year’s Eve was in fancy dress and there was very much a carnival atmosphere. It all got quite surreal too; Vic Reeves’ Big Night Out was very popular at the time so a lot of people were dressed as their favourite characters from that, playing the characters as well as they interacted with the other revellers.

It's weird how sometimes, you hear a word, name, phrase etc. that you've never heard before that sounds strange, and it suddenly starts popping up more commonly.

In my case, I'm currently playing a game called The Sims 3 on my home PC; I'm sure some of you would have heard of, or possibly play, The Sims. In the game, there is a playable Sim called Topher Baker, a baby. When I read his name for the first time a couple of weeks ago, I thought "Topher? Is that really a name? It sounds like gopher."

And now, I'm seeing it in strange places. I watched the movie I, Robot on DVD three days ago; one of its producers is Topher Dow. Last week, I was watching some wildlife documentary on TV, and one of the people on it had the name Topher. And now, this morning, I was absolutely stunned when a guy on the radio was addressed as, you guessed it, Topher! laugh

Also, I've just noticed that Topher is actually short for Christopher, so perhaps it doesn't rhyme with "gopher".

Just discovered that they originally filmed scenes with Peeves for the first Harry Potter film, but they cut them all at the last minute. He was played by Rik Mayall! undecided

Yeah, I found this out quite a while ago. To be honest though, while Peeves may have been funny, I really like the first film how it is. I don't think he would have added that much to it.

That said, I'm not one of those people who constantly nitpicks the series. IMHO it's an awesome film series all the way through. A few odd flaws here and there, but all of them are very easy to forgive. The whole thing is just monumental. Sadly, there are people out there who for some reason have to nitpick every last detail to the point of rejecting the films altogether. Just check out these absolutely baffling 1/10 reviews for the critically-acclaimed DHP2:

www.imdb.com/title/tt1201607/reviews?filter=hate

Seriously?! 1/10 because the filmmakers made a few changes? Does the movie really lose 9 whole points because of that? rolleyes If DHP2 gets one star out of ten, what kinds of scores would these guys give to legendary cinematic stinkers like Battlefield Earth, Alone In The Dark and The Last Airbender?
