Given the peculiarities of English pronunciation, I calculate that the word "scissors" could be spelt in at least 192 ways! shocked

1. The initial consonant(s) could be "s" followed by a silent "c" - as in the correct spelling - or just "s" => 2 options

2. The first vowel could be "i" - as in the correct spelling - or "y" used as a vowel => 2 options

3. The middle consonant(s) could be "ss" - as in the correct spelling - or "s", "z" or "zz" => 4 options

4. The "er" sound at the end could be achieved with "or" - as in the correct spelling - or "ar", "er", "ir", "ur" or "yr" (think of the word "martyr") => 6 options

5. The final consonant could be "s" - as in the correct spelling - or "z" => 2 options

Therefore, the number of possible spellings is at least 2 x 2 x 4 x 6 x 2 = 192. I quite like "syzzyrz". grin
