No. Jake hears Hugh's whistle. I think the audience is expected to assume that Jake then rescues Hugh from the pit as the credits begin to roll.

So it didn't cut off before the end then I saw that! (Airline guy came and asked me to fill about a bloody questionnaire and blocked the screen, then entertainment shut off).

We don't know for sure that he rescued him though do we? And if he did Hugh would have been in big trouble! Oh now I feel very frustrated!

Oh come on, Lils. Have you ever seen a movie before? tongue

Jake hears the whistle = Hugh gets rescued.

Probably. As I recall, Hugh was willing to go to prison for what he had done. Better than starving to death in a pit, eh? smiley

Oh I don't know if Jake heard the whistle!

Hugh is pretty, he would have a hell off a time in prison! shocked I don't like Hugh Jackman usually, but he was very good in this.

I'm going to have to watch the movie again, I had an aisle seat, and as much as it was all nice the way they kept bringing food etc., they kept blocking my movie!

And whats with the old 'filling out the questionnaire' question, you pay all that money for a posh seat, are exhausted after an 11 hour flight... and they bother you with that. Ooops, sorry, wrong thread.

I have jet lag so bad!!!

I had to look over the last posts as my brain is fried, but I did hear what you said, and I did see Jake looking around like he had heard something .

I just meant there is no PROOF that he heard the whistle, as he may have thought it was the wind blowing or something, and then gone home for hot soup as Hugh slowly rots away. grin

(Thanks for not using the roll eye smiley)

That surprises me. I automatically assumed that Jake hears the whistle and pulls Hugh out of the pit.

I like movies where the ending is implied and not wrapped-up in a nice bow. My favorite is the Taking of Pelham 123. And I'm posting a SPOILER WARNING on a 40-year-old movie because I recommend everyone here watch it....

Walter Matthau is a NYC transit cop who spends the whole movie negotiating on the phone with some bad guys--led by Robert Shaw--who have hijacked a subway train. Throughout these phone conversations, one of the hijackers is heard sneezing in the background. After the whole hijacking caper is over, and most of the bad guys have presumably gotten away, Matthau visits Martin Balsam, has a long talk with him, then clears Balsam as a suspect and heads out the door. As he's leaving, Balsam sneezes and Matthau sticks his head back in the door:

I'm trying to think of other movies that have had ambiguous endings, I know what you mean Dusty, it can be interesting.

As for that link I posted on 'Prisoners', they said the weird guy who Hugh 'was mean to' was innocent. But he wasn't innocent was he? I mean even though poor kid had it rough, he knew those young girls were there and he didn't say anything!

Excellent movie, certainly better than the remake.

The other side of the coin are those movies where you say "that better not be the end...credits better not start rolling now...nooooooo!"

The Italian Job. The original, brilliant, inspired-casting one. NOT the travestial remake that isn't even in Italy. Who cares how that ends. Or starts! grin
