I saw a still of Christian Bale with the review of American Hustle in the Evening Post, and I thought at first it was David Walliams as Mr. Dudley in Little Britain! He has a similar comb-over.

I finally got to see Sightseers as I recorded it on Boxing Day. I always liked Alice Lowe when she was Madeleine Wool in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and one of the production team in Annually Retentive. In the film she plays the girlfriend of a man who her mum judges to be a bad piece of work, and she goes on a caravan trip with him. It's a gorier, latter-day equivalent of the Mike Leigh play 'Nuts In May'.

Just back from seeing the new Hobbit film and Gravity at the IMAX next to Waterloo Station in London (the biggest screen in Britain).

Really enjoyed both and seeing them on this amazing screen in 3D is quite an experience.

Watched a couple of good movies on TV recently;

'TrollHunter' a 2010 Norwegian dark fantasy film, made in the form of a "found footage" mockumentary.

&

'Hanna' a 2011 British-German action thriller film that contains prominent fairy tale elements and a Chemical Brothers soundtrack.

Looks like I'm going to miss this one at the movies, so many mixed reports on it.

I saw '12 YEARS A SLAVE' last night.

Yikes, powerful movie but leaves horrible pictures in your head.

Being a fan of District 9 I was really looking forward to Elysium........

Sorry but I really didn't enjoy it undecided

The lead villian was almost pantomime like and the ending was predicable from 20 mins in......

Best wishes

Mixed? In what sense? Overall, I get the impression that reviews have been very positive.

There have been complains about certain technical details, but anyone who isn't knowledgeable about space travel wouldn't even notice. The only other issue seems to be that the plot isn't very complex, but it's not supposed to be. It's a very basic storyline, and still, it is very involving to watch. Visually it's spectacular.

The film has piled up a load of nominations for various awards, and rightly so.

I know, I wanted to see it last night but it wasn't my turn to pick. If it stays for a while longer I may. Didi you have to wear the 3D glasses?

As for the mix, some people I know who saw it said it was just 'meh. undecided

Mixed reports, really? Are you talking to the blue-haired ladies in West Palm Beach? This is one of the best-reviewed films of the last several years... 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, 96% on MetaCritic.com, etc.

Yeah, I know there are a few pinhead critics who say, "Ooooh, it doesn't have much of a plot!" Morons. It's a survival story about marooned astronauts trying to get home. It doesn't need an intricate plot. As for the people who say, "Ooooh, it's not scientifically accurate".... bigger morons. It's entertainment, not a NASA training film.

grin

EDIT: Didn't see Henry's reply before I posted mine. "Great minds" and all....

**MILD GRAVITY SPOILER**

During the first twenty minutes or so I was waiting for the film to switch to Houston Control, a la Apollo 13 or The Right Stuff, where some Ed Harris or Sam Shepard-type was leading a team of Bill Paxton and Don Cheadle-types trying to get our heroes back to Earth. The fact that it never did, staying in space throughout, made the movie so much more intense and unrelenting.

Absolutely. Very intense. It really heightened that sense of isolation and helplessness.
