I watched a couple of reasonably good scary flicks recently - 'Byzantium'' is a fresh take on the vampire story & cleverly done, taking a leaf from 'Let The Right One In'.
The other movie is 'The Conjuring', an exorcism movie which claims to be based on 'actual events' - yeah, right. Well worth a look, especially if you enjoy jumping out of your skin.

This is not that recent a movie but I watched Cloud Atlas and really enjoyed it (apart from it dragged slightly at the end), which surprised me as I thought it was meant to be a turkey.

Meant to see The World's End today, but the screenings were too late and I went to see Monsters University instead.

I enjoyed it, except for a family who were taking photos in the screening room (constant flash photography or strobe lighting brings on a migraine for me). There were also children going to the toilets constantly.

I hope I can enjoy Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa better tomorrow. I'd also like to see Despicable Me 2 as Steve Coogan voices a baddie called Silas.

I saw 'Good Vibrations' yesterday & thoroughly enjoyed it.
Based on actual events, it tells the story of Terri Hooley & how he almost single-handedly shaped Belfasts punk rock scene, investing his own money to produce iconic singles such as The Undertones' Teenage Kicks.

I really think they should see a doctor then! grin

Yesterday in town, I noticed a poster in HMV's window advertising 1970's movies on DVD. The first image was of the film "Jaws". Ironically, HMV is roughly where I got to in the queue to see Jaws the first night I went when they closed the doors as the cinema was full!

And that was in the days of one big theatre (Where I saw Showaddywaddy, Leo Sayer and Jasper Carrott (Not on the same night!)) of probably around 2000-2500 seats! When was the last time a movie sold out a 2000 seat theatre in the UK I wonder. Probably the 1970's!!

Re: Jaws - I loved Peter De Lane's attempt at the theme tune during the Flambards sequence on 'Directors Commentary'!

Also want to see Good Vibrations. Got to see Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa today. The scene where he sings Always On My Mind to Pat Farrell (Colm Meaney) in memory of his wife Molly is very touching - although I was expecting Shape's draconian measures to have included replacing the Willie Nelson version with the Pet Shop Boys version.

Liked the Marillion reference too - one of the North Norfolk Digital employees said he'd played drums for them (and I was thinking that's not Mick Pointer OR Jonathan Mover!).

My family and I watched Despicable Me 2 in the cinema earlier today. My Dad loves animated films so he suggested it, and we really liked the first one so we gave the second a try. My verdict? A disappointment. undecided

The problem with Despicable Me 2 is that its story has too much going on in it. It takes far too long to find a line, and by the time it does, we're three quarters of the way into the film and so the story progress speeds up jarringly. And even then, it STILL gets off track a couple of times. The plot is fractured at best and a mess at worst, and came off as a collection of semi-related skits more than a story.

The film also seperates the three girls from Gru for quite a lot of the film, which was a shame. They are meant to be his adoptive children but they are pushed aside as if they don't matter anymore, with those stupid, raspberry-blowing minions (no, I don't like them very much) brought to the forefront instead. The character of Edith is also drastically stereotyped. In the first film, she's a cute little troublemaking tomboy, but she is turned into a near psychopath in the sequel, obsessed with violence and donning a ninja outfit in many of her appearances. Not much to say about Margo; she doesn't do much in it. Agnes, however, is handled quite well, and is just as adorable as she is in the first film, but overall the girls have little impact on the main storyline. sad

It still had a lot of funny moments, and my Dad loved it. My Dad likes anything with goofy characters and light hearted humour so he came away pleased. My Dad is a big softie and isn't into violence, unless its historical violence because he loves history.

I just expected better because the first Despicable Me was a surprisingly good film. I'd give the film a rating of 2 out of 5. Sorry to be a critic but I love reviewing things. grin

Recently I've seen the Woody Allen movie 'Blue Jasmine'. Not officially but it's based on the Madoff story, how it affects his wife. Highly recommend

Also I saw Lee Daniels THE BUTLER. Awesome movie from stat to finish.

Watched 5 really funny movies just recently:

I Give It A Year is a well above average romantic comedy.
R.I.P.D. sees Jeff Bridges as a law man working for God.
We're The Millers is another great romantic comedy about a guy who enlists the help of some strangers posing as his family to help smuggle marijuana across the border.
Pawn Shop Chronicles is a pulp fiction style comedy based around a yep, you guessed it - pawn shop.
The World's End is Simon Pegg & crew on a pub crawl in their home village. I loved the 'Dusk Til Dawn' twist.

I've recently seen this too and it's pretty good, though I found the first 45 minutes tough going due to the quick changes to the different stories.

Last night I watched The Numbers Station which is the best film I've seen in a while

By the way Dusty, I watched a film with Jude Law and medication that you recommended when I was on a plane, you said it got better so I stuck with it, but I have to say I didn't agree with your review! tongue

Sorry. Technically, I didn't say it got better. I said:

... which could mean either: 1) It doesn't drag as much as it continues, and/or 2) (*SPOILER*) I found it interesting that it changes from a social commentary on the pharmaceutical industry into a Hitchcockian, psychological thriller. I liked the twists.

Well I have very high expectations when you recommend a film, oh well, I had nothing better to do I guess. grin
