Saw this yesterday. Had to convince my son to bypass the sci-fi extravaganzas and the toilet-humor comedies in the theaters. It was excellent. Starts a little slow, but it was ultimately very satisfying and entertaining.

No, nor me, and I don't think your browser is an issue. IE9 here, but the problem is likely to be non-hotlinking by the image host.

Saw 'Behind The Candelabra' today. It's HBO's equivalent of the one-off dramas on past stage and screen stars BBC-4 used to put out.

Michael Douglas played the part of Liberace. Matt Damon portrayed Scott, his so-called chauffeur until he realised he'd been one of many young men the pianist had loved and left. The former protege who'd been Liberace's previous fave reminded me of Sebastian in Little Britain, with his jealousy of Scott!

My images are not showing up now either.

The movie I saw was Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon. That sounds like it would be a corny romantic comedy, but it's actually a nice little independent film about a boy growing up in Arkansas who meets a mysterious stranger named Mud (McConaughey does an awesome job as the title character). It was named the Best American Film at the Cannes Film Festival. It starts a little slow, but I really liked it, as did my 21-year-old blockbuster-loving son. Highly recommended. smiley

Seen quite a few films lately & here's the pick of the bunch...

STOKER
Mia Wasikowska, Dermot Mulroney & Nicole Kidman star in this classy, suspenseful thriller, brilliantly acted & well written.
After shy, 19 year old 'India' (Wasikowska) loses her father in an automobile accident, she is befriended & charmed by Uncle Richard (Mulroney) whom she never knew before the funeral. He seems to take advantage of India's mother Eve (Kidman) aswell, charming his way into both women's lives & into their home, but his cloudy past hides a sinister intent. Top drawer stuff for thriller lovers.

THE CALL
The lovely Halle Berry stars as a Police Operator answering 911 calls.
One day, she receives a call from a young girl whose house is being broken into, but when the call suddenly stops, Halle dials the girl's number back & the intruder hears the phone. Suffice to say, things don't end well.
The story picks up 6 months later & Berry finds herself in almost the exact same situation, but she's not making the same mistake twice...
Not a bad movie & worth the hour & a half.

LAST PASSENGER
A reasonably respectable British thriller set on a runaway train. No big names, but well worth a viewing all the same.

THE INTOUCHABLES (aka UNTOUCHABLE)
A subtitled movie which I really cannot recommend enough. I implore you to take the time to see this.
It tells the tale of the relationship that develops between a rich, paralysed man & an aloof young carer. The French actors will not be known to most here, but that's not to say this movie isn't on a par with the best that Hollywood or Pinewood have ever produced. No guns, sex or violence, just a bloody good movie.
Expect a mixed bag of emotions, both funny & sad, but rest assured, you will never regret seeing this film.

GRUPO 7 (aka UNIT 7)
Translated as Unit 7, this subtitled Spanish movie tells the story of a corrupt Police unit taking the law into their own hands in Seville.
Based on actual events, it follows their antics year by year leading up to the Seville Expo of '92. Great movie.

DEAD MAN DOWN
Colin Farrell plays a Hungarian henchman for a mob boss in the States. After witnessing him kill a man, his female neighbour tries to blackmail him into killing another man who caused a traffic accident that left her scarred for life.
I enjoyed this movie.

DETOUR
A sales executive is driving to a meeting when he gets caught in a mudslide. He awakens to find himself trapped inside his car under loads of mud.
Clever, tense & scary, this is one to watch.

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER
Based on the children's story of Jack & The Beanstalk, this movie features some of the most visually stunning CGI sequences I've seen to date, easily on a par with Jurassic Park or Lord Of The Rings.
Ian McShane & Ewan MacGregor head an all-star cast in this thoroughly enjoyable film (even if it is nonsense) which has been aimed at a slightly older audience.
You shouldn't need to take the kids to the cinema as an excuse to see it.
Treat yourself.

PHANTOM
This movie received poor reviews so I'm really glad I stood by my principle of 'see for yourself'. Based on actual events at the height of the cold war, Ed Harris tops an all-star cast in this story of a Russian submarine that went rogue in 1968, bringing the world within inches of a nuclear war.
I suppose we can thank our lucky stars that we get to see a movie about it, eh?

THE RETURNED (aka LES REVENANTS)
Okay, not a movie, but this superb French series currently being aired on Channel 4 is about a bunch of school kids who are killed on a coach when it crashes in the mountains. They return home four years later & for them, it seems as if they just woke up, but for their families who've had the funerals & have been through the grieving process, it's another story, especially when 'The Returned' seem absolutely fine.
Spooky & intriguing, this will be a hit with fans of the supernatural, despite the subtitles.

I watched a film called White Tiger last night. It was pretty good for a film about the Russian army facing a ghostly German tank in French with English subtitles( which ended up being further and further delayed as the film went on.By the time the credits were rolling, the subtitles for the last scene had just started huh )

I quite enjoyed this until the last 30 minutes, when apparently Michael-Transformers-Bay took over to relentlessly smash buildings and blow stuff up. undecided

That said, I was entertained. The new guy does a good job as a brooding Clark Kent, Amy Adams is a great Lois Lane, and the other actors--Crowe, Costner, Diane Lane, etc., elevate the whole exercise to an better-than-average comic book movie, heavy on the sci-fi.

How is his American accent, given that he's English?

Very good, I guess, as I had no idea he's English. I've realized that lots of British and Australian actors do great American accents. It was a while before I realized that Hugh Laurie, Andrew Lincoln (The Walking Dead), and others are not Yankees. (Yes, I know Laurie was a big star over there for years, but I never knew him until House.)
