Lots of Trekkies didn't like that. In a sense, it mocked the original scene and diminished and belittled the impact of one of the most emotional moments of the entire Trek franchise. I understand that argument. JJ Abrahams has said he wasn't a fan of the show, and there was a lot of shameless pandering throughout the movie. A little more originality would have been nice. tongue

OK, thanks for that.

Sorry for being a little cynical. smiley

As I understand it, there's a bit of an uproar in the sci-fi fandom community that J.J. Abrams is now in charge of both the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises. Probably not a good thing.

I was looking forward to seeing After Earth, the new Will Smith movie, but the reviews are horrendous--a Tomato-meter Rating of 12%. I don't generally pay close attention to the critics when deciding what to see, but when the reviews are this terrible, there's usually something to it.

The reviewer for Rolling Stone says: "After Earth merits comparison with 2000's Battlefield Earth, John Travolta's godawful film.... Yes, it's that bad." Film.com says: "The level to which 'After Earth' is a catastrophe is amazing." Wall Street Journal says: "Is 'After Earth' the worst movie ever made?"

undecided

Last night on TV I watched Trouble With The Curve with Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, and Justin Timberlake. It was completely predictable, sentimental claptrap... but I really liked it! smiley

Watched Les Miserables on Saturday night - I liked Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter best as the innkeepers! I'd seen Matt Lucas rehearsing that role on the 25th anniversary documentary so I knew 'Master Of The House' from that.

The little blonde boy was Jack Wild reborn! I didn't cry as much as my sister and niece did. My younger niece felt Anne Hathaway as Fantine wasn't on very long (she never saw Phil Collins in Hook or Rob Brydon's role in First Knight) and Amanda Seyfried(?) as Cosette wasn't as good as the brunette girl who got shot.

I recently saw Dave Grohl's 'Sound City', which is really more documentary than film, but very enjoyable nonetheless.
It's a history of the famous LA Studio where many, many famous albums were recorded on the Neve 8028 analog mixing console ( http://soundcitystudios.net/recordings-by-year ).

All in all a good way to pass some time.

Thinking about getting this one on blu-ray for myself. Grohl was doing some TV interviews for the film when it was released. It sounds very interesting.

Definitely, if you're interested in studios / recording and the like (which I am), very enjoyable.
Man, does Dave Grohl love that Neve board!

Do you watch the TV series "Southland"? It's kind of similar to this movie.

I've seen a few episodes, but I lost track of the series. As I recall, it's moved between different TV networks and time schedules here. undecided

I finally got around to seeing this, and I found it phenomenally-entertaining. I won't come close to "recommending" it on the Forum, however. If you're at all familiar with Tarantino films, you know if you should see it... or not. wink

I have this one on blu-ray, but have yet to watch it. I'm a big fan of Tarantino's work, so I think I'm going to like it. cool
