Kitty and I have been wanting a dog for a long time. Candy came up on Facebook and she was very near us, so Kitty went to see her and brought her home. She was in a home where there is a sick boy who is terminal. The mother of the boy thought Candy may be a hazard for the boy since she's always at their feet and may trip the boy. We're sorry they had to give up their friend, but so happy to welcome this wonderful puppy into our home.

Nice one

Candy's doing great! She's proving to be a very smart dog. Her bark is funny, being a hound dog. She 'bays' at anyone she doesn't know. Sounds like a coyote howling at the moon. We love her to bits.

Great! So the noise isn't a problem then?

I've never been one to like neighbors who have barking dogs (although it is great for keeping burglars away), so we're doing our best to keep it to a minimum. When it appears she's barking at nothing, we make her stop.

My mother spent the night at our place last weekend and Candy got to know her throughout the evening. She was very comfortable, but then in the morning my mother came out in her jammies which the dog had not seen her in before, so she started barking and howling. Funny stuff.

We're in a neighborhood surrounded with pet dogs that bark. We don't want her to be one of them. She's very smart and seems to understand what's going to get her in trouble grin

How do you get her to stop? I know Beagles are very vocal.

I trained my (late) dog to bark upon command and the word was 'speak', then she understood what 'no speak' meant, it worked well.

We tell her 'bad' when she barks, which she has come to understand. When she's good, she gets a treat. Another cute thing she does is stand on her hind legs and wait for you to walk up to her so she can be hugged and petted. She knows that if she stays on all fours she probably won't get as many hugs being low to the ground, but if she stands up it's a sure hug grin

At 23 pounds, she's too big to pick up or have lay on your lap.
