What is a Bar Mitzvah? I've heard that term so many times and I still have no clue what it is. It has something to do with Jewish boys turning 13 years old, right?

Since I am presumably still the only Jewish person active on this Forum, I should probably respond here. Sorry Schrott, I'm not into it. Much rather discuss Bond films.

If you're truly interested, I'm sure Wikipedia does a good job.

It's a ceremony to introduce Jewish 12-13 year old boys (and girls, but thats called a 'Bat Mitzvah') into adulthood.

Good to know Bond movies are more interesting than something I said was a special experience to me. Sigh.

Whaaa?? huh

That is not at all what I said. My comment has nothing whatsoever to do with your post... I am very glad for you and what you experienced.

My comment was a direct reply to Schrott... I'm simply not interested in beginning a discussion from scratch about Bar Mitzvahs. Or any other such broad topic that could take volumes to explain. It's not the subject... it's the task, as though I were to take the effort to answer the question "What is Prog Rock?"

LATER EDIT: 30 minutes later, Lily, I'm increasingly dismayed by your comment. That you would think I am so callous and disinterested is extremely surprising to me. sad

Nice post COT.

I too am grateful to have children in my life.
Last week I went to my first Humanistic Judaism Bnai Mitzvah.

It was for my person's eldest grandson, whom I have known now for 7 years now, and whom I am very, very fond of and have a great relationship with.

Having been to a few traditional religious Bah Mitzvahs in the past and having to fight not to pass out with boredom at the long ceremony. This one by contrast was entertaining, intelligent and had loads of heart.

I loved it. And now I 'get it', the importance of this ceremony and what it means.

Having kids around keeps us young, at least in our minds, anyway. They remind us of how we were at their age. I've never been to a Bah Mitzvah, but I have always understood that this is a faith-based ceremony that prepares young Jewish boys and girls for adulthood. I'm happy you had a great time, Lily.

I thought maybe you hated Bar/Bah/BNAI/ (why are there so many different spellings?) Mitzvahs, or it made you cross that I liked a Humanistic one.

It did sound like you weren't interested in Bah Mitzvahs!

I know you aren't mean, but I wondered if I'd hit a nerve.

Sorry, didn't mean to distress you. Sorry I made that assumption without asking g first. Forgive me?

Forgiven absolutely. Let's chalk it out to a misunderstanding.

Got to run out to dinner--I'm late. I'll be back to explain the Bar Mitzvah thing. Later....

Thanks Lily and Dust, I looked it up on wikipedia. Now I remember also that Simpsons episode where Krusty the Klown has his Bar Mizwa twice, first as a huge party to his father's disappointment, then again as a serious ceremony. Given the numerous references to Bar Mitzvahs in American TV shows it must be a big deal in the USA.

I guess the varying spellings are just different transcriptions from Hebrew?

I was thinking that too, since my only knowledge of Bar Mitzvahs comes from an episode of Frasier where he makes a speech in Klingon, mistakenly believing itís Hebrew. cheesy

I'm reasonably certain that a Bar Mitzvah is a ceremony practiced by Jews all over the world.

However, it may very well be a more prevalent part of American culture because our Entertainment Industry--particularly Comedy--is heavily populated by Jews, who tend to be highly self-referential.

Here then, is a very short list of American Jewish comedians. See if you've heard of any of them::

Adam Sandler
Albert Brooks
Andy Kaufman
Ben Stiller
Billy Crystal
Carl Reiner
David Brenner
David Cross
Don Rickles
Garry Shandling
George Burns
Gilda Radner
Harold Ramis
Jack Benny
Jack Black
Jason Alexander
Jerry Seinfeld
Joan Rivers
Jon Stewart
Larry David
Lenny Bruce
Lorne Michaels
Louis CK
Mel Brooks
Milton Berle
Pee-Wee Herman
Robert Klein
Rodney Dangerfield
Rosanne Barr
Sarah Silverman
Sasha Baron Cohen
Steven Wright
Woody Allen
The Marx Brothers
The Three Stooges

What about Geddy Lee for a Jewish Canadian Rock Star? grin
