Kind of goes against their hippocratic oath, doesn't it? Breaking the oath should be considered malpractice with legal ramifications, but that rarely happens these days.

I guess that would support the idea of staying healthy so you don't have to see a doctor. Kind of a catch 22 for those who don't like to eat right and exercise, eh?

Well that's quite the sweeping condemnation of an entire profession. There are plenty of excellent, trustworthy, ethical doctors out there who are focused on doing the best job for their patients.

Doctors in the UK aren't much different tbh. God forbid if you need to go in hospital when you get older!

Agreed Dust.

I would've lost a leg as a kid if it weren't for a great doctor, and would have lost a daughter several years back if not for some other fantastic ones as well. One in particular who is someone I not only have the greatest amount of respect for but also owe the greatest amount of thanks to. The man was faced with a huge almost insurmountable challenge yet used all his expertise, and talents to find a way. No one will ever convince me there aren't great doctors out there.

I'm a doctor.

Okay, I'm not really a doctor... I'm a financial advisor. smiley

The reason I mention it is that my profession also has a very bad reputation, and much of it is well-earned. There are oodles of crooks, con-artists and charlatans in the financial services industry who are only interested in lining their pockets by cheating and preying upon people--often seniors. I pride myself and many of my colleagues for truly looking out for the interests of our clients, and I have slept well for 24 years knowing I have made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of people who trusted me. I also attempt to act as an advocate to help people avoid getting ripped-off by the scumbags in my industry.

So it sometimes bothers me to hear people say the doctors suck, lawyers are crooks, financial advisors are cheats, etc. It may not be easy, but it is very possible to find professional people who work hard for their patients/clients and put a special emphasis on doing the right thing.

Once again Dust, we're in total agreement. I'm a contractor, and if you substitute "contractor" for financial advisor, you've said exactly how I feel about my profession. I've been doing it for 33 years, and do everything I can to further the reputation of my trade. Even if a customer can't afford my services, I do all I can to help or advise them based on my experience so they don't get taken advantage of by someone shady.

Although I am in the medical field, I don't trust doctors any further than I can throw them. They are the 3rd leading cause of deaths in the U.S. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2000/07/30/doctors-death-part-one.aspx

Due to HIPAA laws, I won't state what I do in the medical field, but I see negligence, gross errors, unnecessary infections and death on a daily basis in our hospitals. The doctors will tell the families some concocted reason why their loved one died on the operating table, when in reality it was due to poor decisions or ineptness on the physician's part.

I know that strays from the original subject matter of exercise and eating right, but getting a doctor's approval to start an exercise regimen doesn't add up to much, IMO.

Every profession has it's good and bad people, look at Dr Harold Shipman! But on the whole, doctors (here at least) do a good job despite political interference etc. Like most things in life, you hear about the bad cases, but the good ones never get reported, so while I guess there are lots of issues that you get to hear about, given the size of the US, just consider how many you don't.

And I wouldn't recommend throwing a doctor. You might do your back in. And he isn't going to be in a good mood....... grin

Coming back to this forum after being absent for a week, checking all the unread posts from the meantime, clicking on some thread only to find one unread post on top of a new page, which just says:

It doesn't me, not really. To say something like just doesn't make sense. There is good and bad in all professions. Our job is to do our research, be an informed patient/client, and most importantly for me, trusting the gut.

COT was just saying that he didn't trust them, which seems fair enough. When you've encountered a lot of bad people in any profession, it makes you wary doesn't it?
