Or, if you're a transvestite, eat, drink, and be Mary!

I had a band gig today. The band gig was cool but it was something else that really saved my day:

As I own no car one of my bandmates, our bassist, picked me up and brought me back. Manfred sold his car and is currently using his parents' car, which is 15 years old and has only a tape cassette player plus radio installed - no CD player, no USB plug, and none of us has one of these tape cassette adaptors to connect something.

So I grabbed two random cassettes from my collection. I hadn't played any of my cassettes for ages. Well, those I took happened to be: Joe Walsh "But seriously, folks" + Genesis "Selling England by the pound" and Steely Dan "Aja" + Donald Fagen "The Nightfly". Four albums that were years ago copied from my dad's vinyl collection so I would have them too, now with a layer of dust...

Long story short, it was just blissful. We played Joe Walsh and Genesis on the way to the gig and Steely Dan and Donald Fagen on the way back. Even though each of us knows these albums inside out, listening to them this way was just so different: the tapes didn't start with song 1 right from the beginning; they hadn't been rewinded so you were bang in the middle of things. As the cassettes had to be inserted sideways like it used to be common in car tape decks I didn't even know which one of the respective two albums would come up - kind of the vintage version of shuffle mode! grin The recordings weren't digtal remasters or new improved digital remasters or brand new crystal sharp digital remasters - they were original vinyls from the 70s copied to tape, meaning they had zero dynamic compression plus tape hissing. In short, we blasted them loud as can and they never did our ears in. You could turn the volume up and still turn up and still turn up and there was still so much sound left.

And finally the music itself. God, how fantastic is that stuff?! I've known these songs for nearly my whole life and they are still so stunning... The combination of all this, the good old music with the good old sound plus the old way to play it from cassettes, it was like a flash back into the time of our lives for both Manfred and me.

Really, I'm not preaching that everything used to be better or analogue kicks digital or you should add artificial vinyl crackling to your MP3s or anything like that. It was just so weird to see how different experiencing music is depending what way you consume it, it is crazy. By any means it made us enjoy music we love as if we were hearing it for the first time, or: now I remember why I love that stuff so much... wink
