Because you should have stuck to your guns and said that now is still summer in your eyes. We are never going to agree when the seasons start and finish and that's fine as there is no right answer. If you're being consistent and defining seasons to start on the equinoxes/solstices, then you would define 19th March as winter, 19th June as spring, 19th September as summer and 19th December as autumn. I would define them as spring, summer, autumn and winter respectively. What I find amusing here is you've now introduced the concept of a "transition season". laugh But don't take my comment too seriously nor to heart, it's just a bit of fun. grin

Today was curry night at Wetherspoons pubs meaning you could get a curry and a drink - alcoholic or non-alcoholic - for about 5-6. There was also a blackboard saying "For only 2.10 enjoy a desert!" So I had a Sahara and my friend had a Gobi. grin

Though I consider the first 19 days of September summer, I see it as the days where summer transitions into autumn, with each day becoming more autumnal and less summery until September 20 arrives and it's properly autumn. And I wasn't offended, I was just confused, because I was attempting to comprise by introducing this "transitional season" concept. laugh

Hi there

Had to laugh at the antics of a mouse I caught in the kitchen last night. Tom & Jerry weren't in it and it certainly put a new slant on All In A Mouse's Night I can tell you!

That reminds me on something: my ex used to be interested in a religious belief system called 'wicca'; I don't remember too much about it as it did nothing of interest to me - except for one thing I found quite remarkable: wiccans divide the year in 8 seasons. Each of the normal 4 seasons is split in two halves; they take the solstice and equinox days (March 21st, June 21st, Sept 23rd and Dec 21st) and add 4 more days somewhere in the middle between those (if my memory serves right it's May 1st, Aug 1st, Nov 1st and Febr 2nd, didn't make sense to me as these days don't lie exactly in the middle of the seasons but whatever, religions can't be bothered). They have their own names for their 8 seasons (some made up pseudo-celtic sounding ones) but then - now this is where it starts to get confusing wink - they would go and group 2 seasons each back to Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, but shifted backwards because they let them start with their additional dates - meaning, Spring starts on Febr 2nd, Summer on May 1st, Autumn on Aug 1st and Winter on Nov 1st. Sadly, I never got the chance to discuss this matter with my ex's religion mates grin The one thing I liked about their system was, all the name-giving aside, they basically tried to establish transitional seasons. Only problem is which days in the year would be good starting points for those new seasons? There's no more astronomical events left besides the solstices and equinoxes that mark season changes in the year unless you include the moon and the stars into your system - something fresh made-up religions always seem to be extremely fond of, but my heart rejected that idea as the geek in me wants to stick to things that make sense. So I counted the days in the calendar and found the wiccans missed the middle days between solstices and equinoxes by at least 5 days - for example, this Summer started on June 21st and Autumn starts on Sept 22nd so the day that is exactly in the middle between these two dates would be the night from Aug 6th to 7th. I asked my ex why wiccans got their transitional season dates so messed up and she replied something like 'well, um, huh, you overthink this'.

My company just announced that our Annual Meeting this January will be in New Orleans. Yay! As much as I enjoy Las Vegas (where we've had three of our last six meetings), there's nothing like hanging out on Bourbon Street, eating some awesome Creole and Cajun food, and listening to the best live Jazz in the world.

cool

I don't comment on your posts Alan as I know we can piss each other off, and we aim for peace around here.

But in this case I have to ask HOW CAN YOU SMILE WHEN YOU FIND A MOUSE IN YOUR KITCHEN! shocked

Long overdue IMHO legislation whereby in 2015, supermarkets and large stores will have to charge customers 5p for carrier bags. smiley

We have been doing that in Toronto for a few years now, then last year a lot of the stores stopped doing it, some still do, causes quite a bit of trouble.

I have to say though it really mad me aware of how many plastic carrier bags I use!

The scheme in Tesco is good, where they give reward points for using your own bags.
