Well with all the conflicting suggestions I had (not on here I hasten to add!- I've asked many people!), yours was the best Foxy! I caught my X in a good mood today and he offered to look at it. What he doesn't know about cars isn't worth knowing! The radiator did need topping up a lot which suggests there is a leak somewhere in the system. Just where it is remains to be discovered. I suppose a trip to the garage is in order so God knows how much that'll cost. I'm thinking of having it serviced early as the oil's at it's lowest safe level too. Just when I thought I'd saved up enough to have my bathroom done! undecided angry

You could do a little detective work. Get the engine hot ( a 5 mile drive should do). Park it, leave it running with the bonnet up, and see if you can hear a hissing sound or any sign of water dripping. DON't put your hand or anything near moving parts including the electric fan (near the radiator in front of the engine) which could start running at any time. It is most likely to lose water when fully hot due to pressure in the system. If Liam is right and it's the head gasket, it will be leaking internally, so you'll see/hear nothing, but there's no guarantee you'd spot an external leak either, it could be somewhere obscure, or drip onto a hot part and evaporate instantly. Worht a look though. Also, look under the car, in case it's dripping onto the floor.

Oh, and by the way, you can top the oil up you know!!! grin (Once a week if you had my wife's bloody Astra!!!)

Read my post on the other thread! sad After topping up the coolant yesterday, my X took the radiator cap off today and it piddled out a load of water, obviously under pressure! The expansion tank was full too. On turning the engine on, with it idling it continued to overflow! X said best case scenario is the head gasket. Worse case engine could be f***ed! Loads o money I haven't got!

Was the engine hot? Removing the radiator cap when it's hot (esp. at full working temp) is dangerous as you are releasing the pressure, so the water which is above 100 C (boiling point) but which does not boil while the cap is on (keeping it under pressure, to raise the boiling point, thus allowing the engine to run at higher than 100 C for better efficiency) will boil immediately when the cap is removed. While it's running it may well overflow.

You mention a red and blue light system for the temp monitoring. Odd. What kind of car is it?

did you try running it cap on at full temp as I suggested?

No the engine wasn't hot. He wouldn't have taken the cap off if it was. It was stone cold.

It's a Nissan Micra 04. Got quoted 1000 by a garage today. The bloke who services it came out and had a look so he's seeing to it at the mo. Might end up part exchanging it but I can't afford another car really, well not a comparable one. Most people change their car for a newer one. I'll be going down in the world as usual!
