There are three primary villains in these past two Star Wars movies. In my opinion, over these five-plus hours of film, those three characters combined do not nearly portray the menace and evil than does the first five seconds of screentime of a guy named Darth Vader, over forty years ago.

For me, this sums up a huge part of the problem with the continuing saga.

To wit, the opening moments of this new film succeed in making one of the main villains into a complete jackass. This is a pointlessly-whimsical way to re-introduce us to a character whose goal is to destroy the Rebel Alliance and bring an end to freedom in the Galaxy.

I'm going to see it in the new year (in the cinema, unlike TFA and RO which I watched on DVD) and I'm expecting it to be awesome. I've had to be very careful to avoid spoilers online.

Even if Kylo Ren isn't particularly menacing, I thought he was a strong character. Adam Driver did a great job at being what you'd expect the grandson of Darth Vader to be like. The Force Awakens is now my favourite Star Wars movie because of the excellent and really enjoyable characters in that movie. They are so likeable and easy to connect with. I didn't like it that much the first time but on my second and third viewings of the film it really clicked with me and now I think it's the best in the series. smiley

Now... this is something I just cannot understand. What is up with all the crazy hatred for The Force Awakens and now The Last Jedi? When TFA came out, Star Wars fans were quick to jump on it and whine that it sucked because it's story is similar to A New Hope. And now, with TLJ, it has the lowest Metacritic user score of the movies - even lower than 2008's The Clone Wars! shocked

I'm not kidding, it's at 5.0/10 and may even drop lower...

http://www.metacritic.com/movie/star-wars-episode-viii---the-last-jedi?ref=hp

I mean, it can't be that bad! It can't be worse than TCW which is just a cheap feature-length pilot of animated series with crappy animation that makes the Gungan battle at the end of Episode I look like Episode V's iconic Hoth battle.

I don't care what they say, I'm going to love TLJ, I just know I will. Bring it on! (after Christmas though because I'm extremely busy until the new year) grin

Phew! shocked That was close. Nearly read Dusty's spoiler. Just saw the red text at the right time before I saw anything.

When continuing with this thread I'll have to quickly scroll past that post. smiley

Keep in mind that while I try to be very considerate in posting spoiler warnings, not everyone else does. And sometimes what doesn't seem like a spoiler to someone who's seen the movie absolutely does to someone who hasn't.

You may want to avoid this thread entirely. smiley

I really enjoyed this film, more so than The Force Awakens. Yes it was a bit silly, and I agree with your point Dust about the menace (or lack thereof) in the villains. It would have been nice for Snoke at least to be genuinely scary but I think he's a bit too cartoonish to take seriously.

Worth the price of admission just for the music though in my opinion cool

I was disappointed.
My first quibble was the survival of someone who seemed destined for death early on in the film, the announced expiration of another character at the end left me flat, and I am not a great fan of fantastical displays of “The Force” being used.

I like my science fiction to keep at least one foot on the ground at all times, and I felt this film became ungrounded several times.

It's way too long and has some terrible clunky dialogue but then SW films aren't known for their brilliant scripts.

It was okay. Daisy Ridley is very easy on the eye, which helps. Pity she covered up her lovely calves halfway through.

SPOILERS AHEAD

Just got back from watching it...

As much as I would love to say I liked it... I was very disappointed. sad

Sure the action was great and the effects top-notch as always but the whole thing was just so muddled with so many mindless and unnecessary plot threads that it just lost me half way through. And the characters all felt like ridiculous caricatures of their Episode VII selves. Worse, Snoke went from a sinister and mysterious villain to a complete joke, and his throne room was so blandly designed that it looked unfinished.

And the porgs. What an sad waste of potential! I thought they would be these adorable little critters who actually help out the heroes. But nope. What are they instead? A running gag! A forced meme! They show up to make stupid faces and that's it? That's the best they can do? It was just so lazy.

All of this sucks because TFA is currently my Star Wars movie, it was better than this one in almost every way, and now it'll be so much harder to watch knowing that the movie that follows it is so underwhelming.

At least now I know why it has such a low Metacritic user rating. Now I understand why so many Star Wars fans were disappointed. The mystery, for me, is solved.

I love this bit of your commentary:

It set off a whole load of amusing imagery in my head. Presumably after a couple of ineffective interior designers were killed for their inability to come up with a suitable colour scheme and decor, no-one else dared put in for the job. Ideally I suppose if you're trying to take over the galaxy your mind will be on other matters. That said, I've never fathomed these sci-fi stories with a villain trying to take over even a planet, let alone the entire galaxy. I mean, the admin and paperwork alone must be nightmarish.

I agree that TFA is much better. This one is a bit nothingy.

Here's my current ranking of the Star Wars movies (not counting Rogue One):

1. Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
2. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
3. Episode IV: A New Hope
4. Episode VII: The Force Awakens
5. Episode II: Attack of the Clones
6. Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
7. Episode I: The Phantom Menace
8. Episode VIII: The Last Jedi cry

MORE SPOILERS AHEAD

You might think ranking it last is harsh... but the more I think about what I watched last night... the more I analyse each individual segment of the film... the more it really dawns on me just how much of a dramatic step down it is from TFA.

I'll never be able to watch TFA again without feeling sad during the scenes with Snoke, knowing he'll meet an early demise with no backstory. He's now arguably the worst villain in the saga! And that ending with Rey and Luke? Well I'll just be thinking "The next thing he does is tosses away his old lightsaber and tells Rey to piss off". The short flashback to Rey being abandoned by her mysterious parents, a flashback that raised so many questions? I'll just think "Whatever, her parents aren't important anyway."

I have no other choice but to declare it the worst Star Wars film, as many, many fans have done. cry

TFA is now my fourth favourite Star Wars movie rather than my favourite. All thanks to TLJ, some if its greatness has been flushed down the drain. It's still entertaining and action-packed enough to be better than two prequels and ROTJ, though. I will buy and watch TLJ on DVD when it comes out, and maybe it will grow on me a little, but the damage to TFA cannot be undone.
